Back in Madison, Jonathan and the movers packed up the rest of his things into the truck. Jonathan handed the driver the directions to his new home in the country. And because it was a three-hour drive, he told him that if they wanted to, they could stop to get something to eat on the way. So the movers left and Jonathan went back into the apartment to do a walk-through.
He made sure that everything was clean and looked good before he dropped off the keys in the landlord's dropbox. Jonathan and his wife had a lot of happy years in that apartment. But also many sad ones towards the end. If only he could erase some of those unhappy memories from his mind. Only time might help with that.
Jonathan walked out and glanced back as he climbed into his beautiful cobalt blue 1966 Pontiac GTO. He couldn’t help but think about the last devastating scene that he saw in the apartment with his wife. Those thoughts made him want to leave only quicker. Leaving only dust in the air, he stepped on the gas pedal. He couldn’t wait to start over somewhere else.
As he left the city and drove down the highway, Jonathan made a quick turn down Cemetery Road. He drove his car up to the open gate and stopped briefly. I can do this, he thought as he drove in. Jonathan glanced at the different headstones as he drove towards the back where his in-law's family plot lay. Heather, his wife was buried right next to her uncle Charles.
Jonathan Parked the car and got out. It just started to sprinkle so he wanted to make it a quick goodbye. When he saw her grave, a rush of sadness ran through his body and he burst into tears.
“I’m so sorry Heather… I’m so sorry,” he went down to his knees.
He sat there for a few minutes and tried to compose himself. The sprinkles turned into rain so he managed to stand up. Jonathan reached out and touched Heather’s headstone.
“I will always love you,” he said, and slowly turned away.
