Jason pulled up to the emergency entrance of the hospital and parked his car. Carefully he scooped Julie up and out from the passenger seat and hurried into the hospital. What Jason did not expect was a waiting room full of people. There were people crying and other people shaking. It was obvious that everyone was scared and no one knew what was happening.
An already busy nurse saw Jason struggling to hold his wife in his arms so she grabbed a wheel chair that was near by. She instructed Jason to wheel Julie off to the side and that they would be helped in a minute. Before Jason had a chance to say anything, another nurse hurried over to him and Julie. Jason told the nurse that they were at a restaurant finishing their dinner when the people there started to get sick. He said that Julie seemed alright until they left and walked toward the car.
The nurse felt for a fever but just like the others, Julie did not have one. Jason asked the nurse what was happening and all she could say was that she honestly did not know. The nurse then asked Jason a list of questions such as, what had Julie eaten or drank that was different from him. How he was feeling, and have they traveled out of the country. Along with a few other things like that. Jason told the nurse that the only thing that Jason didn’t have that Julie did was the water. Julie prefers a special bottled water and that restaurant is one of the local places that carries it.
With a concerned look on her face, the nurse called over one of the doctor’s that was helping another patient. She leaned next to him and whispered in his ear. The nurse told him that it seems like the majority of the people who have come in foaming at the mouth have drank a specific bottled water. He did not want to believe that bottled water could be the cause of all this, but getting it tested was one way to find out. The doctor had noticed that one of the people in the waiting room was holding a bottle of that water. He asked the man if he had drank any of the water from the bottle and the man said no.
The man told the doctor that it was his sick wife’s water. The doctor asked the man if she drank that brand of water before and he said she started drinking it last week. The doctor took the bottle of water from the man and called an orderly over to him. He instructed the orderly to take the bottle of water down to the lab and tell them know that Dr. Lorn needs it tested immediately. If there is something in the water, we’ll find out, he thought.
Dr. Lorn then checked on Jason and Julie. While Jason was talking to the doctor about Julie, another person suddenly stumbled in through the ER doors yelling help me. It was only a few seconds and then he vomited a yellowish slime all over the floor. Nurse Samuels quickly hit the hazmat button and the doors closed and locked. No one could come in or leave until they figured out what was going on. One of the orderlies who quickly put a hazmat suit on came out and helped that person to a solitary room. A veteran nurse who also put a suit on assisted the orderly. She knew that samples of the slime and the mans blood needed to be taken.
As for Julie, her blood was taken too and needed to be tested. She was very cool to the touch and still unconscious. Jason just held her hand and tried to get her to wake up. He told the doctor that he still felt okay, which was good. As soon as they had another bed available, then Julie would be admitted. Otherwise the hospital has taken in fifty two new patients in only a few hours.
Please join me again next week for chapter three and please let me know what you think of this story so far.
I like this story, but it does make me second think about drinking bottled water.
