It was almost 4 am and the bright moon lit up the front yard and everything in it. Dukee was sitting on the bench by the window looking out and meowing loudly. Mia trotted down the hallway to the front of the house to see where Dukee was. As Dukee meowed again, Mia ran over to him,
“Shhh, what are you doing?” Mia whispered loudly.
“I’m talking to the cat out there in the front yard but it’s ignoring me,” Dukee looked at Mia.
Mia jumped up onto the bench next to Dukee and looked outside. She blinked her eyes a few times to adjust them.
“That’s not a cat, that’s a raccoon,” Mia said.
“A raccoon? It looks like a cat,” Dukee said.
“Haven’t you seen a raccoon before?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“No, I haven’t,” Dukee looked it over.
“Well, that’s why your meowing hasn’t gotten its attention, because it’s a raccoon. So be quiet before you wake everyone up,” Mia hopped back down to the floor.
“Are you sure that’s not a cat? It kind of looks like you, only fatter,” Dukee said.
Mia turned around and glared at Dukee, “no, it’s not a cat.”
“Well, whatever it is, it’s leaving now,” Dukee said as he watched it leave the driveway.
“I’m really surprised that where you lived before and saw all those other animals, that you had never seen a raccoon,” Mia said as she walked toward the narrow window by the door.
“I know, it’s weird isn’t it?” Dukee hopped down off the bench.
“Yes it is. But I’ve seen them a few times now, usually out my bedroom window though,” Mia said.
Dukee walked past Mia and toward the hall, “I still say that it looked like you.”
“No it doesn’t. But if it did, I’m not fat,” Mia looked back at Dukee.
“I didn’t say that you were fat. I just said that the raccoon is fat,” Dukee snickered as he walked down the hall.
“Sure, it might have similar colors and a poufy tail like mine,” Mia grumbled as she looked out the window.
Dukee walked into his bedroom and nibbled on some of his food before lying down. Mia turned and made her way over to the coffee table to get a drink of water. When Mia was done drinking, she hopped down and licked the water off from around her mouth.
“Besides, my fur is probably a lot softer than that old raccoon’s,” Mia said.
