It was around seven in the morning and Mia was in the front living room. She was sitting on the front window sill looking for a lizard when Carrie the cardinal flew down onto the grass.
“Hi Mia,” Carrie waved with her wing.
Mia meowed and was excited to see Carrie. She hadn’t seen or talked with her in quite a while. Carrie hopped into the flower bed and then flew up to the base of the window. She landed on the ledge just outside of the window so Mia could hear her better.
“Well, hi Carrie, how have you been?” Mia asked.
“I have been doing just fine. I’ve just been keeping my family healthy and helping Harold with house repairs,” Carrie said.
“House repairs? Did something happen?” Mia asked.
“No, just usual repairs. See, we don’t have a house like yours so we need to fix it up more often,” Carrie explained.
“Oh, I see. Well, I’m just happy to see that you are okay. I was starting to worry that something bad had happened to you,” Mia said.
Just then, Dukee walked into the living room and peeked around the end of the leather sofa.
“Who are you taking to?” Dukee asked.
“Oh, you don’t have to worry Mia. Even if something bad did happen I’m not afraid,” Carrie said.
Mia glanced back at Dukee, “Carrie is here.”
“Oh really,” Dukee trotted over to the side table and jumped up onto it.
He walked to the end of the table and saw Carrie outside the window, “hello Carrie.”
“Hello Dukee. So how have you two been?” Carrie asked.
“I’ve been good except for when we have thunderstorms,” Mia said.
“Oh yes, those storms can be loud and dangerous. So I understand your fear Mia,” Carrie said.
Dukee looked at Carrie, “I’ve been doing good and you sure look good. How is your family?” He asked.
“They all are doing well. My oldest children have had more young ones. So, our species is still thriving,” Carrie said.
“That’s good to hear,” Dukee said.
“I’m also happy that we haven’t had any serious storms so far this year. The threat of having to rebuild is always there but it’s nice when we don’t have to,” Carrie fluttered her wings.
“Yes, I can understand that,” Mia said and then licked her right paw.
“Well, you two look healthy. Are your humans treating you well?” Carrie asked.
“Yes, my mom buys me the best food and treats. And even though I get sassy with her, she shows me that she loves me,” Mia said.
“What about you Dukee?” Carrie looked at him and asked.
“Yeah, my mom feeds me good too and plays with me when she’s home,” Dukee said.
“Oh, that’s good to hear. Now, I need to fly now and I’m sorry that I hadn’t visited in a while. I’ll try and stop by next week sometime. You both take care and stay safe,” Carrie said.
“Okay, Carrie. You take care too,” Mia said.
“And be safe,” Dukee said.
“Bye for now,” Carrie jumped and flew up away from the window.
Carrie did a slight waved of her left wing before she flew up and over the house. Mia moved her face close to the window and looked up into the sky.
“I think she flew over the house,” Dukee said.
“Yes, she must have. It sure was nice to see her again though. I was starting to worry about her,” Mia said and then hopped down off her litter box cabinet.
“I wasn’t worried. Carrie seems like a very smart bird,” Dukee said as he turned around.
“That’s true, she is smart,” Mia said and walked toward the hallway.
Dukee sat down at the other end of the side table and looked out the narrow window by the door. Mia continued down the hallway and headed to her bedroom. It was really nice to see Carrie again, Dukee thought. Special visits from friends is usually a nice thing. And it’s good to catch up with the people you care about.
