Dukee has made it a morning routine to go to the front windows and check for visiting squirrels. Some mornings have been a disappointment for him because it has been too cold for the squirrels. But the weather outside today, seemed a little bit warmer so the squirrels decided to visit. Dukee carefully hopped down onto the blanket and laid down. Mia stepped up onto the kitty tower from the coffee table and quietly crawled into the cube. They both watched as a squirrel climbed up onto the window sill.
“Isn’t it strange how the squirrels don’t seem to be afraid of us anymore,” Mia said.
Dukee thought for a minute while he watched the squirrel and then said, “they probably know that there is a window here. Otherwise, they would be afraid.”
“Yes, you might be right. After all, when we charge and hit the window they run,” Mia said and then giggled.
Mia then slowly and carefully crept onto the blanket next to Dukee. Dukee slightly leaned to the left and looked at Mia. He was surprised that she laid that close to him.
As a few seconds passed Dukee’s focus then went back to the squirrel as it readjusted it’s footing. It wasn’t long after that when the squirrel leaped onto the bird feeder pole. They watched it as it tried to climb up it but slid down a few inches.
Mia giggled and then said, “the pole must be a little wet.”
“Yeah, I guess it is,” Dukee said as they watched it slide down again.
The squirrel finally made it up high enough to where it grabbed the feeder and climbed onto it. It then sat in the dish of the feeder and nibbled on a few nuts. All of a sudden, a bird flew down and landed on top of the bird feeder pole. It quickly chirped at the squirrel as if to say, those seeds are for the birds. The squirrel didn’t care though, after all he usually left the smaller seed for them. The bird then flew up and landed on a branch of the tree. He probably figured that he had to wait his turn.
Dukee then noticed another squirrel as it scampered into the yard. Him and Mia watched it as it searched the grass for a nut or something to eat. It finally found something and sat still to eat it. The squirrel on the feeder must have finally had enough to eat and grabbed onto the pole. The pole was still a little slippery so it slid all the way down like a fireman on a fire pole. I’ve seen a squirrel do that before and it is quite funny to see. Mia giggled as she watched it quickly run up the tree.
I suppose Mia and Dukee might find critter watching just as relaxing as us humans do. Although, it could be just their animal instincts that keep them focused. Maybe the drive to hunt even though they do not need to. Whichever it is, they still seem entertained which is good.
A special thank you to my sister for capturing the moment of Mia and Dukee laying so close to each other. That does not happen very often.
Until next week, Mia and Dukee hope that wherever you are, that you are safe and warm.
Another story of Dukee and Mia that made me laugh !
