Mom told Mia that she will be back soon just as Auntie said the same to Dukee. Mia and Dukee both watched as Mom and Auntie walked out the front door. When Mia heard the screen door close, she walked up and looked out the narrow window by the door. Dukee walked over to the bench in the dining area and jumped up onto it. The two of them watched while Mom and Auntie walked down the street.
“Where are they going? They’re walking down the street,” Mia said.
“Maybe they’re going to the neighbors,” Dukee said as he watched.
“Mom’s never gone over there before,” Mia said as she lost sight of them.
“Well, maybe their just going for a walk,” Dukee said as he looked over at Mia.
“Okay, maybe… I’ll just sit here and wait then,” Mia said.
Mia sat by the narrow window and looked outside. A large lizard suddenly caught her attention as it scurried around the pillar . Dukee laid down on the bench and just relaxed. He knew that Auntie wouldn’t be gone that long since they didn’t take the car.
While Dukee laid there and looked out the window, a squirrel scampered out from under Mom’s car. Dukee lowered his head and watched the squirrel as it crept over to the flower bed by the window. He was trying to be still and quiet but as the squirrel got closer to the cement bird bath, Dukee let out a couple of snorts.
Mia cocked her head as she looked over at Dukee, “what was that?”
Laying as still as possible Dukee answered, “what was what?”
“What was that sound that you made? It sounded like you snorted,” Mia giggled.
Dukee watched the squirrel as it got a drink of water from the bird bath and thought about what Mia asked him.
“Oh, I guess I did snort,” Dukee snickered, “well, the squirrel is right here drinking. I guess I got excited.”
Mia walked over to the bench and then stood up on her back legs to see out the window. She watched as the squirrel drank a little bit more before it crept into the front yard. Dukee looked at Mia as she had her front paws resting on the bench.
“Did you see it?” Dukee asked her.
“Yep, it’s cute how it drinks,” Mia said as she got down on all fours and walked back to the narrow window.
Seeing the squirrel drinking made Dukee thirsty. So, he hopped down off the bench and made his way through the kitchen and to his bedroom. Mia walked over to the side table and stepped up onto the bottom shelf of it. She turned around and sat down. She was still able to watch out the narrow window closest to the table. I’m sure Mom will be back soon, Mia thought.
In Dukee and Auntie’s bedroom, Dukee got a drink of water and then jumped up onto the leather stool by the window. He saw the neighbor next door doing something in his back yard. Dukee decided to lay down in the warm sun that was shining in and watch the neighbor. He also watched some kind of bug that suddenly landed on the screen of the window. This sun feels good, Dukee thought as he closed his eyes.
About twenty-five minutes passed and Mia had nibbled on some of her food and also got a drink of water. When she heard her Mom’s voice outside, Mia trotted back over to the narrow window and watched. Mom dug her keys out of her pocket while Auntie closed the screen door behind her. When Dukee heard the screen door close, he hopped down off the stool and hurried to the hall.
“See, I knew that they wouldn’t be gone long,” Dukee said while he walked toward the front of the house.
“Yes, I did too, I guess,” Mia patiently waited while Mom unlocked the front door.
Mom and Auntie walked in and greeted Mia and Dukee with love and pets. Dukee followed Auntie to their bedroom while Mia sniffed and rubbed up against her Mom. It was a beautiful morning for Mom and Auntie to get some fresh air and exercise. But now, the cats demand their attention. Enjoy your day and your weekend everyone.
