Dukee was laying on the blanket on top of Mia’s litter box cabinet and looking out the window. When Mia walked into the living room, she didn’t notice Dukee until he squeaked at the birds he saw.
“Oh, you startled me,” Mia said and then jumped up onto the coffee table.
“Oh, sorry about that. Look at these little birds. There’s a bunch of them flying in and out of the tree,” Dukee said.
Mia walked over to the window sill and looked up at the tree, “oh wow… They sure are cute little things.”
“Yes they are… Isn’t it interesting how different some things seem when change happens?” Dukee said.
Mia looked at Dukee, “what do you mean?”
“Well, you make it sound like you had never seen those birds before but you have,” Dukee said.
“I have?” Mia looked back out the window and focused on the birds.
“Yes, but most of the time they visit in the spring. It looks as though they wanted to make a change this year,” Dukee said.
Mia was able to pick up on the colors of the birds and remembered, “oh okay, I do remember seeing them. They only visit for a short time and then they’re gone for awhile.”
“Yep, and this change must be beneficial to them in some way even if we don’t know why,” Dukee said.
“Yes, sort of like our stories and how Auntie switched Sundays story to Wednesdays now,” Mia said and looked at Dukee.
“Yep, and hopefully it will work out better for her and her work schedules,” Dukee said while watching a little bird flutter above the grass.
“Well, as long as she keeps writing about us, I don’t mind the change,” Mia said.
All of a sudden, the neighbors German Shepard barked and ran toward the tree. Most of the little birds flew out of the tree and over to the woods across way. The neighbor said a command and the dog quickly ran back to him.
“Wow, did you see that?” Mia said.
“What the birds or the dog?” Dukee asked.
“The dog. The man said only one thing to the dog and he listened,” Mia watched as the dog jumped up into the truck.
“Well, some animals can be well trained,” Dukee said.
“True. As a cat though, I decide when I will allow my humans words to dominate me and when not to,” Mia said while she got up and walked over to her food bowl.
“You sure do believe that you are that special don’t you?” Dukee said.
“Well of course I am. I know that you try to act like an important one as well,” Mia said.
“Sometimes, but I still understand that I can’t always have it my way,” Dukee said and watched a car go down the street.
Mia ate a few kernels of food and thought about what Dukee said. She then got a drink of water and turned around.
In between licking the outside of her mouth Mia said, “you do have a good point there… Sometimes I try and get Mom to get up early to get me my breakfast and she won’t. I sometimes accept it and leave her alone for awhile.”
“See, and it’s actually how we all get along together. By compromising and not being selfish all the time,” Dukee said.
“Yes, you’re right,” Mia said.
“Hey, the Ibis are here now,” Dukee said and lowered his head and ears.
Mia slowly crept back to the window and peeked around the blind, “I like those birds.”
Where we live, Mia and Dukee get to see various animals from time to time. But the sad thing is, that more and more trees are being taken down to build homes. We understand that humans need places to live in, but what about all the wild animals? They need homes too and this was their home in the first place. One thing that is good, is that Florida conservation does recognize this problem and still makes sure that there are woodlands and marshes left untouched for our animals. I think that more people need to understand the consequences of destroying lands and constantly building. But for now, I will leave it at that.
Please join us next time for more of: The Day With Dukee And Mia.
Today's story of "The Day With Dukee And Mia" is great. I love how you even capture photos of Dukee and Mia with the wildlife.
There does need to be more people aware of keeping places for wildlife alone !
