It was almost 11 pm and the house was now quiet except for soft sounds from a couple of TV’s. Mia and Dukee sat in the family room near the cardboard barn talking about the day.
“That was nice of Tracy and Barry to come over for Auntie’s birthday wasn’t it?” Dukee asked Mia.
“Yes, I guess so. I’m still scared of them though,” Mia said.
“Why, I told you that they are good humans,” Dukee said and licked the top of his paw.
“I know, but humans who don’t live here make me nervous,” Mia said and then walked toward the hallway.
Dukee stood up and followed Mia to the front of the house. Mia walked over to the coffee table and jumped up onto it. She started to munch on some of her food while Dukee jumped up onto the side table near the leather sofa.
“Hey, there’s a frog on the window again,” Dukee hopped down onto Mia’s litter box cabinet.
Mia dropped a piece of food from her mouth, “oh yeah, where?” Mia hurried over to the window.
Dukee reached out his paw and tapped the window. The large tree frog moved slightly and Mia saw it. She walked up and tapped the window too, but the frog sat still.
“These are big frogs here. Where I used to live, they weren’t this big,” Dukee said as he watched it.
Mia watched the frog and squinted as she saw the sky light up with lightening, “uh oh, not again.”
“What is it?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Wasn’t that the sign of more thunder?” Mia asked.
“Oh, maybe. Just wait,” Dukee said as he listened.
Mia hopped down off her litter box cabinet, ran around the sofa, and under the rocking chair. Surprisingly there was no sound of thunder this time.
“There’s no thunder this time,” Dukee said.
“There still might be,” Mia said.
Dukee saw a flash of lightening again but heard no thunder. He hopped down and walked over to Mia.
“I think it will be okay Mia. It flashed again but I didn’t hear anything,” Dukee looked at her.
“Okay, I guess you’re right. Well, I’m going to go to bed now anyway,” Mia climbed out from under the rocking chair.
“Okay, goodnight,” Dukee said.
“Goodnight,” Mia said and then trotted down the hallway.
Dukee glanced out the narrow window by the front door and then headed toward his bedroom. He was feeling a little tired himself.
