Mia sat by the sliding glass door to the back porch and watched with amazement. She saw Dukee out on the back porch chattering at a squirrel that hung upside down on the screen. What is that squirrel telling him, Mia thought. Auntie and Mom watched as well while the squirrel made vocal noises at Dukee. It sure wasn’t happy about Dukee being out there.
Auntie waited a few more minutes and then walked out onto the porch. Just like that, the squirrel jumped off the screen and ran to and up the tree by the back fence. Dukee came inside when Auntie went out and Mia caught up to Dukee as he walked toward the kitchen.
“What was going on out there?” Mia asked him.
Dukee stopped and looked at Mia, “I don’t know. I was just minding my own business when that squirrel jumped up onto the screen. It scared me at first but then I knew that it couldn’t get in.”
“Yeah, that would have scared me too… When Mom got up to look at what the noise was all about, I followed her and was surprised to see a squirrel up on the screen out there,” Mia said.
“Well, it happened once before and Auntie had to scare it away,” Dukee said as he walked down the hallway.
Mia followed Dukee as he walked up to the narrow window by the front door. Mia walked up to the other narrow window and looked outside.
“I saw a squirrel once on the screen out there,” Mia said while she looked out onto the front porch. “Otherwise they have come up close to the big window over there.”
“Yes, that’s one thing that I noticed since I moved here is that there are a lot more squirrels here and that they aren’t afraid to come close to the house,” Dukee jumped up onto the side table.
Mia stepped up onto the low shelf under the side table and snuck out between the sofa and her litter box cabinet. Dukee walked to the end of the table and looked out the window. One squirrel was nosing around in the front yard while another climbed into the flower bed. Dukee carefully hopped down onto the blanket that lies on top of Mia’s litter box cabinet and then laid down. He crept close to the window and watched the squirrels.
Mia hopped up onto the coffee table and then stepped up onto the kitty tower. She walked around and crawled into the cube part of it. She peeked out and saw the squirrel in the yard but not in the flower bed.
Dukee glanced at Mia, “you should come up here, there’s a squirrel right below the window in the flower bed.
“Yeah, I’ve seen them that close before,” Mia said but continued to lie in the cube.
Dukee stretched his body out so that he could get as close to the window as possible without letting the squirrel see him. Mia giggled at Dukee as his orange furry body flattened out.
“What are you giggling at?” Dukee said softly.
“You… You look like a big furry squashed orange lying there,” Mia giggled.
“I don’t think that I’ve seen a furry orange before,” Dukee snickered.
The squirrel in the flower bed suddenly hopped out of it and ran toward the tree. Another squirrel ran at that squirrel but then turned quickly around. All this running around happened because the next door neighbor opened up his garage door.
“I wonder why those squirrels startle so easily?” Dukee backed up.
“Yeah, I don’t know. They seem to run sometimes even when a car comes down the road,” Mia said.
Dukee and Mia watched as another squirrel slowly made its way down the tree and onto the grass. It looked around and then dug in the grass for a buried nut. Today is a bright and sunny day outside, with a lot of critter activity. Squirrels are scurrying, birds are tweeting, and lizards are lurking. The warm temperature is rising slightly which also makes for a beautiful day. Mia and Dukee wish you all a wonderful day just because.
