Dukee was laying on his and Aunties bed when he heard some noises out in the family room. He perked up his ears and looked toward the bedroom doorway. Is that the sound of my paper, he thought. Dukee listened some more and then heard someone run to the other room. Oh, that must be Mia. I wonder what she's doing, he thought.
Dukee hopped down off the bed and walked out of the bedroom. He stopped before entering the family room and looked down the hallway. He didn't see anyone, or hear anyone for that matter. As Dukee walked over to his cardboard barn and paper, he glanced to his right and saw Mia as she had just stopped. She was just about to leave the kitchen when she saw him.
“Where you playing on my paper a couple of minutes ago?” Dukee asked.
“Mee, why would I do that? I have my own paper in the front living room,” Mia said and then quickly walked to the back of the sofa.
Dukee lowered his head and peeked under the sofa. He watched Mia as she ducked under the blanket that hung over the back. I'll get her, he thought. Dukee quickly jumped up onto the sofa back and peeked over. This action startled Mia so she hissed and growled.
“It’s just me silly. I still see your tail and backend,” Dukee said and chuckled.
“Do you really?” Mia asked.
“Yep… You've gotten too big to fit under there all the way,” Dukee said as he watched Mia squish closer to the sofa.
“Can you still see me?” Mia asked.
“Yep,” only your tail now though,” Dukee said and then hopped back down.
As he peeked under the front of the sofa again, he saw Mia looking at him.
“I never could fit all the way under this one. It sits to low to the floor,” Mia said.
“Yeah, I can see that,” Dukee said.
Dukee sat back up and waited to see what Mia was going to do. She laid there a minute and then backed out from under the blanket. Mia then, crept to the end of the sofa by the end table and slowly walked in between the two and stopped. She heard Dukee as he licked his right paw, so she peeked out at him.
“I know that you're still there,” Dukee said.
As he looked to his right, he saw Mia when she pulled her head back. Mia then heard the paper that Dukee was sitting on crinkle. Dukee quickly peeked at Mia and she hissed at him. Dukee giggled and ran away. Mia trotted out from her hiding place and looked to see where Dukee ran.
She saw him at the front of the house by one of the narrow windows next to the door. Mia walked down the hallway and saw Dukee glance back at her. He then ran and jumped up onto the side table. Mia quickly ran around the leather sofa and jumped up onto the kitty tower.
Dukee hopped down onto Mia’s litter box cabinet and laid down on her blanket. The two of them laid there quietly until Dukee turned and looked at her.
“Why did you hiss at me before?” Dukee asked.
“Which time?” Mia said.
“Oh yeah, both times. I was only playing with you,” Dukee said.
“I think it's a natural response for me. It let's anyone know that I am here and I will protect myself,” Mia explained.
“Oh, that makes sense. I guess that I do that too when I'm fearful of something,” Dukee said.
Dukee turned back towards the window and looked around for some birds or critters. The both of them enjoyed the morning sunshine that came through that window. Most of the time Mia would take a bath there, but Dukee beat her to the spot this time.
