Mia was crouched near the front window watching a little black and white bird in the grass. As she crept a little closer to the window, the bird flew up into the tree. Mia then got up and stepped onto the window sill to look at the birds in the big tree. She observed a few other little birds hopping around on the different branches. And high over the street, Mia noticed a large vulture flying around. She watched it for a minute until a squirrel ran into the front yard. The squirrel ran up to the tree and dug into the ground. It found a buried acorn and started to eat it.
“They look so cute when the sit like that and eat,” Mia said.
While Mia was in the front living room, Dukee was out back in the screened porch. He was watching a squirrel too as it ran across the fence and up the tall pine tree. At least it’s a little warmer out here today, Dukee thought. Dukee jumped up onto the tote that’s near the screen and looked up into the sky. He saw a crow fly over and land on one of the branches of another tall pine tree. The crow sat there and made a couple of loud caw caw sounds. As Dukee watched the crow, he saw a robin fly down and land on the grass.
Dukee chattered at the robin as it pecked at the ground. What a pretty bird, he thought.
Just then, Dukee heard something moving on the drain pipe just outside of the screen. He waited and watched to see if it would come into his sight. The sound of scratching disappeared as a brown-colored lizard hopped onto the screen.
“Larry, is that you?” Dukee asked.
“Hi ya kid. How have you been?” Larry asked.
“I’ve been good, how about you and your family?” Dukee asked.
“All is well with us. Since hurricane season is over, everyone is more relaxed. I see that someone has been cutting up the trees around here, how come?” Larry asked as he scurried a little closer to Dukee.
“Oh, yeah, the owner’s of the house had some people come and cut some of it down. I heard Auntie say something about insurance reasons. Whatever that means,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, it’s hard to say why humans do some of the things that they do,” Larry said.
“Yes, that’s true. But anyway, what have you been doing?” Dukee asked.
“Oh, not much except living life and raising the kids. What about you?” Larry asked.
“Yeah, not much here either. Just taking care of Auntie and playing with Mia when I can,” Dukee said.
“How is little Mia?” Larry asked.
“She’s good. Sassy as usual,” Dukee chuckled.
“Yes, the female’s can have some spunk at times. But that is good because it keeps us going,” Larry said.
“Yes, that’s true,” Dukee looked toward the sliding glass door, “hold on a minute, Auntie is at the door.”
Auntie opened the door and asked Dukee if he was doing okay. Dukee stayed sitting on the tote so Auntie assumed so and closed the door.
“That’s nice that your Auntie checks up on you,” Larry said.
“Yes it is. Some days when it’s chilly out here, I wished that she would check on me sooner though,” Dukee licked his paw.
“Well, you’re the one that wants to come out right? She doesn’t just put you out?” Larry asked.
“No, it’s me that wants to come out. She doesn’t force me out or anything like that,” Dukee said.
“Well, see, she probably just lets you have some time to yourself,” Larry turned around.
“That’s true. Did you see something?” Dukee looked around.
“Oh, yeah, I saw a little fly but it flew away,” Larry said.
“Oh, I thought so,” Dukee said.
“Well, I better be going Dukee, I told the little lady that I would only be gone a short while. It was really nice to see you again, and please tell little Mia that I said hello,” Larry said.
“Okay Larry, I will. You take care and I’ll see you again,” Dukee said.
Larry scurried down the screen and jumped onto the drain pipe. He shimmied down the pipe and hopped out onto the grass. Dukee watched as Larry ran across the grass and disappeared on the other side of the fence. Well, that was a nice surprise, Dukee thought. As the day got warmer and the sun shined onto the floor of the porch, Dukee hopped down off the tote and laid down in the patch of sunshine.
