The Day With Dukee And Mia

Chapter 24, The unexpected

Because it was grandpa’s birthday, everyone was up early. Dukee had his breakfast and was out on the back screened porch watching a squirrel. Mia was being silly in the front living room. She had found some leftover catnip from the night before. Auntie and Mom watched Mia as she sat like a loaf of bread but hopped around like a wound up rabbit toy. A streak of sunlight shined on the floor where Mia was hopping around so you could see dust particles and hair boofs drifted through the air. Mia saw those particles and hopped at them as well.

You’re a silly girl Mom said to Mia. That just made Mia act even sillier as she twisted and hopped around some more. Mia then stopped and licked her front left paw. She then walked over to the rug and plopped down. It seemed that playtime was over at least for a little while. Mia then rolled over onto her side and stretched out her legs.

Auntie went to check on Dukee and saw him sitting on the rug and looking out into the back yard. She looked out but didn’t see anything. Dukee then saw Auntie and wanted to come in. When Dukee walked inside and around the wingback chair, Mia jumped up and ran to the hallway. She sat and waited to see what Dukee and Auntie were going to do.

Dukee looked toward Mia as he walked ahead of Auntie. He sat down and yawned as if he got up too early. Mia plopped down in the hallway and rolled over to look cute. Dukee looked at her but knew that she like to trick everyone with that move. Since Auntie went into her bedroom, Dukee walked a little closer to Mia.

“You know I’m not going to fall for that,” Dukee said.

“Fall for what?” Mia asked while she rolled over onto her back.

“That… You think that rolling around makes you look cute. I know that you just like to tease us. You’re like a… Venus fly trap,” Dukee said.

“A what?” Mia rolled over and laid like a loaf of bread.

“A Venus fly trap. It’s a plant that lays in wait for an innocent victim to come near it. And when the victim comes close or touches it, bam, the trap grabs them,” Dukee sat down.

“I never heard of a Venus fly trap. Where did you learn about that?” Mia asked.

“Auntie was watching a video about it. And she’s talked about it before,” Dukee said.

“Oh, well I like to show that I’m a happy kitty but if you touch my belly I will get you,” Mia giggled.

“See, that’s what I mean. But yes, I can understand not wanting the belly touched. I let Auntie only do it for a few seconds before I bite her,” Dukee said and then licked his front right paw.

“Why do our humans feel the need to touch us so much?” Mia asked.

“Well, they find it fun and soothing I guess,” Dukee said.

“Oh… Speaking of soothing, I hope a reader of our story, Margaret, is doing better,” Mia said.

“Oh yes I know. It’s unfortunate that she was the victim of a bad dream. Her kitties dream had to have been horrible in order for her to wake up so scared and bite her like she did,” Dukee said.

“Yeah it must have been bad… Well, I hope that everything gets better for Margaret and Callie. I know that Callie probably didn’t mean to hurt her,” Mia Said.

“Me too,” Dukee said.

Mia turned around and walked back into the front living room. She glanced at her Mom sitting in the chair and then walked over to the coffee table. Mia jumped up onto it and decided that it was time for a little snack. Dukee turned around and walked to his bedroom. He wanted to see what Auntie was doing.
