Dukee watched Auntie R (Mia’s mom) as she pulled into the driveway, “yay they’re home,” he said and then jumped down off the bench.
“My momma is home?” Mia said as she walked over to the narrow window by the door.
They both heard the outside garage door open.
“Yep and so is mine,” Dukee said and walked into the kitchen, “and any minute now she will come through that door,”
Mia watched out the narrow window and saw her momma and grandpa, but no Auntie, “I don’t see her or her van,” she said.
Dukee walked into the family room and jumped up onto the sofa. He thought about jumping onto the bar counter but he waited instead. Grandpa walked out from the laundry room as usual and carried his lunch to his bedroom.
“I still don’t see her,” Mia said.
Dukee stood with his front legs on the arm of the sofa and waited for his mom. Auntie R opened up the front door as usual and carried her groceries inside. Dukee jumped down and ran into the hallway. He saw Mia getting petted by her mom and then ran back into the family room. She’s coming, I know it, Dukee thought as he jumped up onto the chaise lounge chair. After a few minutes, he heard the laundry room door and jumped from the chaise, to the wingback chair. He ran across the small end table and back onto the sofa.
Dukee then leaped up onto the bar counter and hurried along the edge. He only saw his auntie bringing in grandpa’s groceries but still felt that his mom was just outside. Dukee then jumped up onto the kitchen cabinet, and then up onto the walls that surround the kitchen. He stood on the ceiling that covers the pantry and looked out the front window. I don’t see her, he thought and wondered. Auntie R then told him that his momma will be home later because she’s at work.
“Meow?” Dukee said.
Auntie R acknowledged him by saying yes later, and then closed the laundry room door. Dukee watched her while she walked into the dining area. He noticed Mia looking up at him and she shook her head no. He knew then that his mom wasn’t home yet. So, Dukee laid down up there and watched his auntie when she walked back into the kitchen. When she was done in there and then sitting down in her chair for her lunch, Dukee decided to go to his room. He hopped down onto the refrigerator, down to the small counter, and then onto the floor. I guess I’ll just go take a nap then, he thought.
Mia looked down the hallway and saw Dukee go to his bedroom. She then
watched her momma eat something round and sweet smelling. She didn’t know what it was, but her momma seemed to be enjoying it. Mia’s happy though that her momma is home. Even though she enjoys her quiet time, Mia always likes to know where her momma is. That seems to be the case with most house cats. Even though they have the reputation of being a more independent animal, they still like to know where the hand that feeds them is. When they want attention, they like to know that their human is not too far away from them. And when their human does come home from where they might be, most of the time they are happy to see them.
