The rain poured down and the thunder rumbled. Mia crouched down close to her Mom’s feet and thought, I wish that noise would stop. Dukee walked down the hallway to the front of the house and looked out the narrow window. He watched the rain hit the porch screen as he walked up to look out. Even though we have needed the rain, Mia doesn’t like the sound of thunder. While Mia sat and waited for the sound to stop, Dukee jumped up onto the side table. He walked down to the end of the table and sat down.
As Dukee glanced around the front yard, a flash of light caught his eye. What followed next made everyone in the house jump. A loud boom sounded and rattled the walls. Mia quickly ran down the hallway and slid as she turned the corner. Auntie saw Mia as she huddled close to the spare bedroom door and knew that she wanted to hide. Auntie got up from her bed and opened the door for Mia. Thank you Auntie, Mia thought as she went inside the room.
After about a half an hour, the rain stopped and there was no more thunder. Mia walked out into the hall and looked around.
“I sure hope that it’s over now,” Mia said.
Dukee hopped down from the wingback chair and walked over to Mia, “are you alright now?”
“Yes, as long as that noise doesn’t start up again,” Mia said.
“Well, You know it’s going to happen again, it usually does,” Dukee said.
“I know… I don’t know why it scares me so much but it does,” Mia looked down the hall and out the narrow window by the door.
Mia heard her Mom open up her bottle of soda in the front living room and decided to go in by her.
“Where are you going?” Dukee asked.
“I’m going up by Mom. I think it’s safe now and Mom probably misses me,” Mia said.
Dukee snickered as Mia walked to the living room, “she’s so funny to think that her Mom misses her after such a short time.”
Mia walked up to her Mom while she sat in her chair and looked up at her. Mom asked Mia if she was okay now and told her that the storm is gone. Mia rubbed on her Mom’s hand and then gave her a few licks.
“Thank you for the kisses,” Mom said and petted Mia.
Mia sat down and looked toward the front window. The sky seemed brighter and the sun was starting to shine again.
Mia knows that many things benefit from rain when it comes, but why there has to be thunder with some of it, she will never understand.
