It was around seven-thirty in the evening when Dukee meowed and meowed as loud as he could. He picked up his stuffed cardinal with his mouth and carried it out into the family room.
“Meow, meow,” Dukee said as he dropped his toy.
Mia was in the front living lying in the bean bag by her Mom when she heard Dukee. She jumped out of the bean bag and walked into the hall to see what he was doing. Mia watched him as he hit the squeaky mouse that he walked up to with his paw and jumped into the air. She quietly giggled as she slowly crept down the hall toward him.
“Meow, Meow,” Dukee said before he hit the mouse again.
Mia took another step and softly giggled. Dukee felt that he was being watched so he turned around.
“What are you doing?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“What are you doing? I was resting nicely until your loud meows woke me up,” Mia said as she walked toward him.
“Well, I can’t help it that you are always sleeping. I’m just playing with my toys,” Dukee said as he sat down in front of the cardboard barn.
“I’m not always sleeping, but I was quietly resting by Mom. You know that Auntie is in the living room too, right?” Mia asked.
“Yes, I know but I wanted to play with my toys. Do you want to play?” Dukee asked.
“Um, no, not right now,” Mia said.
“Oh, okay,” Dukee licked his front paw.
Mia looked at Dukee and asked, “why do you have to meow so loud?”
Dukee looked at Mia, “Am I really that loud? It doesn’t seem that loud to me.”
“Yes, you get pretty loud and deep sometimes too,” Mia said.
“Oh, I don’t know. I guess I just like to be heard like Auntie has said before,” Dukee said.
“Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if the neighbors can hear you sometimes,” Mia giggled.
Dukee snickered, “yeah maybe.”
Dukee stood up and pounced at the furry mouse that was sitting there. Then, he hit the mouse toward Mia. The mouse stopped right in front of Mia’s feet. She looked at it and then looked up at Dukee. Just to please him, Mia swiped at the furry mouse and hit it across the floor. Dukee jumped at it and hit it back to her. Mia jumped to the side and hit the mouse again. This time Mia hit it so hard that it flew up into the air and landed onto the sofa. Dukee looked toward the sofa and giggled. That made Mia giggle too.
“That was a good hit. Of course it didn’t make it to me, but it was still a good hit,” Dukee giggled.
Mia giggled again, “thank you. I guess I am stronger than I realize sometimes.”
“Yes you are and that’s good,” Dukee said.
That made Mia feel good that Dukee recognized her strength since she was only two. As for Dukee, he got the attention that he wanted and Mia didn’t even realize it. I guess sometimes it’s good to be vocal when you really want something. You just need to be nice about it.
