Dukee was laying on the brown paper in the family room when Mia walked out of her bedroom. She at first did not see Dukee until he moved just a little. The crinkle sound of the paper quickly gave him away so Mia suddenly stopped.
Mia stared at Dukee and Dukee stared right back. Then she turned her head to look straight ahead and slowly took a step. She continued to watch Dukee from the corner of her eye as she took another slow step. Dukee had the urge to pounce towards Mia but he didn't.
Once Mia felt confident about the distance between her and Dukee, she casually continued on and to the front of the house. Dukee decided to go up front as well so he got up, did a downward dog stretch and then walked down the hallway. He stopped briefly before he entered the living room to see where Mia went. She sometimes hides so she can chase him away.
When Dukee heard Mia crunching her food he knew then where she was. So, he walked over to the bench this time and jumped up onto it. He looked out the window for a squirrel but didn't see any. Maybe I will wait for a few minutes, Dukee thought as he laid down and watched out the window.
Mia was surprised that Dukee did not come to the window near the kitty tower. So, when she finished eating, she hopped down and walked over to where Dukee was.
“I haven't seen any squirrels yet,” Mia said.
“That's okay, I've been watching for them,” Dukee said.
Mia looked up at Dukee and asked, “how come you came to this window?”
Still looking out the window Dukee replied, “I just felt like it.”
Mia inched her way a little closer to the bench and asked, “do you mind if I lay up there too?”
Dukee looked at the space next to him and said, “go ahead, there's plenty of space for you.”
Mia stood up on her back legs and looked at the space. She then looked at Dukee and carefully jumped up onto the bench. Mia gracefully laid down at the far end of the bench and looked out the window.
“Did you hear all that rumbling yesterday?” Mia asked Dukee.
“Yes, and it shook the floor and walls too,” Dukee said.
“I saw some men outside with some big things and then mom told me that everything was alright. What do you think they were doing,” Mia said.
“I don't know but they sure were noisy,” Dukee replied.
“Do you think they will be back?” Mia asked.
“It’s possible. Hey look, a squirrel,” Dukee said and then held real still.
Mia looked at Dukee and giggled, “I think it can still see you.”
“I know but I want it to come closer,” Dukee said.
Mia humored Dukee and laid still too. They both watched the squirrel as it hopped and scampered into the flower bed.
“Shh,” Dukee said.
“I can't get any quieter,” Mia whispered.
All of a sudden Mia spotted a little lizard on the window screen near Dukee.
“Look, a lizard,” Mia said.
Dukee glanced at the window and saw the lizard, “yep, I see it.”
Dukee then went back to watching the squirrel while Mia stared at the lizard.
“Do you think squirrels eat lizards?” Mia asked.
Dukee thought for a minute, “I'm not sure. If I have to guess, I would say no they don't.”
“Oh, okay,” Mia said and felt somewhat relieved.
What Dukee and Mia do not know is that squirrels are omnivores so they do eat meat. At times a squirrel will find small lizards and other meaty critters scrumptious. But we won't tell Mia and Dukee that. I do want to apologize for this story being a day late. I had to work yesterday and did not plan ahead this time.
As for the noise that shakes the walls in this story, the county has been digging up part of the canal right next to our house. I guess they are going to lay some new drain piping in there and across the road.
So, until next time, Dukee and Mia hope that you have a wonderful day and week.
