The Day With Dukee And Mia
“Guess who I saw go through the backyard last night?” Mia jumped up onto the bench by Dukee.
“Who?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Rafael,” Mia said.
“Oh? Did you talk to him?” Dukee asked.
“No, he didn’t see me. He looked like he might have been following something,” Mia said.
“Oh okay. I was wondering if he was still around,” Dukee looked out the front window.
“Yeah, me too. I wonder if his mom allowed that other kitty to go into their house like he wanted,” Mia looked up into the sky.
“That would have been nice if she did. As much as I enjoy being out on the porch, I don’t think that I would like roaming around outside all the time,” Dukee said.
Dukee looked up at the sky, “what are you looking at?”
Mia giggled, “nothing, I just wanted to see how long it would take you to look and wonder.”
Dukee looked at Mia, “ha ha ha very funny.”
Dukee looked around and then down at the flowers. “hey look, it’s a hummingbird.”
Mia looked up into the sky, “where? Where is it?”
Dukee snickered at Mia, “you probably wouldn’t see it that easy in the sky. Most of the time they hover over some flowers.”
“Over flowers? But you said bird, right?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, but a hummingbird is a very small bird, and it drinks the nectar from flowers,” Dukee explained.
“I don’t think that I’ve seen one of those birds before,” Mia looked at the flowers in the flower bed.
“I used to see them where I used to live, but I haven’t seen them here yet,” Dukee said.
“Oh… But why are they called hummingbirds?” Mia asked.
“Well, I think that it’s because their wings flap so fast while they hover, that their wings can make a humming sound,” Dukee said.
“Wow, I bet they are cute looking,” Mia still looked around the flowers.
“Yes, I guess they are. One time when I saw a brown one, I thought it was a bug, but it wasn’t,” Dukee sat up and itched his ear.
“What colors are they?” Mia asked.
Dukee finished itching and put his back foot down, “well, like I said some are brown but some can have blues and greens on them.”
“Wow, they sound pretty and interesting,” Mia said and then licked her front left paw.
“Yeah they are. Maybe someday you will see one. We might need more flowers that they like though,” Dukee said.
Mia and Dukee continued to sit there and watch for critters. Mia was hoping to see a hummingbird while Dukee just enjoyed the critters that did come along. Here in Florida we have a lot of different critters. Which most of them we prefer that they stay outside. I think one of Mia and Dukee’s favorite critters are the lizards. They can pop up anywhere at anytime and keeps Mia and Dukee entertained. Mia also likes the tree frogs at night that climb on the windows in hunt for their meals.
