Dukee was sitting in the family room near the hallway when Mia walked up to him.
“What are you doing?” Mia asked.
“Nothing, just sitting here cleaning my paw,” Dukee licked his front right paw.
“How come when some people come here you’re not afraid but then with others you are?” Mia asked.
Dukee finished licking his paw and set it down, “oh, you mean a few days ago when Tracy and Barry where here?”
“Yes, the ones who were visiting,” Mia said.
“Well, I’m used to seeing them from where I used to live,” Dukee said. “Why are you still afraid of them? You’ve seen them a few times now. And Auntie said that Tracy rescued you when you were a baby and was your first human mom.”
“She did? She was? I sort of recognize her but I don’t remember much from then,” Mia stopped to think.
“Yes, that’s what Auntie said anyways,” Dukee got up and walked toward the front living room.
Dukee first walked up to the narrow window by the front door and looked outside. Mia also walked into the front living room but went over to the kitty tower. She jumped up onto the tower and sat down between the post and the cube. Dukee then jumped up onto the side table and walked to the end of it. The two of them looked out the window and scanned the front yard for critters.
“So, that lady that was here used to be my mom?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, I guess so. Her name is Tracy,” Dukee looked down at the flower bed.
“Oh, well how come Mom is my mom then?” Mia asked.
“Maybe your Mom now wanted you more… And maybe Tracy knew that your Mom would like to take care of you,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Oh, that makes sense. Maybe Mom needed someone like me,” Mia looked back out the window.
“Yeah, maybe. They’re all good humans though. Tracy and Barry have always been nice to me,” Dukee lifted and licked his left paw.
Just as the two of them were looking out the window, Carrie the cardinal landed in the grass. She waved her wing to Dukee and Mia and then plucked a worm out of the ground.
“Is that who I think that is?” Dukee asked.
“Yes, that’s Carrie. It looks like she just got her lunch too,” Mia said.
Carrie flew up into the tree and carefully ate the worm. Mia and Dukee watched her as she flew down and landed next to the window.
“Hello my lovelies,” Carrie said.
“Hi Carrie,” Mia and Dukee said at the same time.
“I’m sorry that I can’t stay but I just got some lunch for my babies. I just thought that I would say hello since I saw you. I’ll see you later,” Carrie flew up and over the house.
“What did she mean that she just got lunch for her babies? She just ate the lunch,” Mia said.
“Yeah, and she has more babies?” Dukee looked at Mia.
Well, spring is here and not only are the flowers blooming, but the critters are too. Mia and Dukee don’t mind though because it gives them more things to watch for out the windows.
