When it comes to cats some of them can fool you. Especially if you haven’t learned how they are. I personally have had only five cats so far within my life and have enjoyed all of them. They all have unique personalities much like humans and can be demanding as well. Dukee, my male orange tabby is for the most part easy going and mild mannered. He has his moments though when he wants something and is very persistent about it. He’ll even sit and stare at me until I get up and do what he wants.
Dukee is also a very vocal cat and will make sure that you know he’s around. We usually respond to him and find out what he wants. Sometimes it is just acknowledgement. Other times he could be wanting a few treats, to go out on the porch, or just some physical attention. When it comes to play time, he will play with you briefly and then lay down. Sometimes I think that he just wants me to be in the same room as him.
Mia, my sisters cat is very different than Dukee. She acts like a pretty little princess but with an attitude. We are not exactly sure of all the breed mixtures she is but she is part Main Coon and part Siberian. The cute thing about her is that she is lower to the floor than most and has a soft squeaky meow. Now, Main Coon and Siberian are know for being affectionate. Mia is only when Mia wants to be. So, if she rolls over on her back and her beautiful furry belly is showing, it’s not an invitation.
“See, you don’t have everyone fooled by your cuteness,” Dukee said to Mia.
“I don’t mean to fool anyone. I just like to lay on my back, so there,” Mia said and stuck her tongue out at Dukee.
“Why can’t you be friendlier? No one here is going to hurt you,” Dukee said.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s a safety switch that I have,” Mia said as she rolled onto her side.
“A safety switch? You mean, if you allow only so much contact then you always have control?” Dukee asked.
Mia thought for a moment, “yes, maybe.”
“Hmm, interesting,” Dukee said and then walked over to the narrow window by the front door.
When it comes to Mia, her human mom is the only one who can give her full body strokes. But even then the duration of it is limited. She will allow Auntie to scratch her neck occasionally if she is in the mood. Mia hisses quite a bit and sometimes growls if she really doesn’t want to be bothered. But another cute trait of hers is that she loves to play. She’ll play with the laser light if her mom or even Auntie turns it on. She is real good at keeping herself entertained by playing with her Lamb chop stuffy or one of the many other toys that she has.
Mia also loves to run. She will run a few laps back and forth from her bedroom to the front of the house. Every once in awhile she will chase Dukee around the house which he enjoys. Mia is also good at alerting us to undesirable things on the floor. Such as little poop presents that stick to her fur and then drop off. But if one is stick stuck to her back end don’t touch her because she will get mad.
“Ha ha, you have an extra furry backside,” Dukee snickered.
“Yeah, so,” Mia said.
Sometimes my sister and I wished that Mia was more relaxed and accepting of physically contact. Because she is such a soft and pretty little girl and we would love to pick her up and give her big hugs. But, she is who she is and we know our boundaries with her. She is still very enjoyable to have around. Dukee accepts the way she is too even though sometimes he does push the limit.
Mia’s strong attitude does keep Dukee at bay most of the time. If she doesn’t want to be bothered, most of the time he will respect that. But there have been times where he wants to show her that she isn’t always the boss. So, one of us has to step in and make sure that peace stays in the family. After all, Dukee is probably five pounds heavier than Mia.
So, there you have it, Mia is just too cute to handle. And we love her just as much as any other cat that has been in the family. Just like humans, we all have our interesting traits and quirks. Some might be more dramatic than others but it’s part of who we are as individuals.
“See, I’m even more special than you are,” Mia looked at Dukee and said.
“She didn’t say that,” Dukee said.
Until next week, Mia and Dukee wish for you all to have fun and love each other.
We have three that only want attention on their terms. No rubbing bllies EVER. That gets toenails stuck in you quicker than the blink of an eye. They all LOVE chin, ears and top of the head rubs. One I can pick up to put in the top tier of one of the towers if I have put a handful of treats in it for her. One I have to wear long grill mitts if I need to chase her around the house to get her into a carrier on days they have Vet appts. Sometimes I have to cancel the appts becase I can't catch her. She will get behind the drier and climb into the wall behind the vent tubing. She will climb up inside the couch. She always knows something is up if I try to shut room doors so she can't hide. While I try to catch her the other two hide. If I get them first the expert hider disappears. Don't even look at the carriers because then the all hide. Sophie gets the zoomies all the time. Marie used to but now doesn't because she and Sophie don't get along. We have lost 5 cats to different types of cancers. My husband was a heavy smoker and second hand smoke is worse for pets, especially cats, than it is for people. We lost him to lung cancer 12 1/2 yrs ago. The fur babies we have now are not around smokers so hopefully they will be with us a long time.
