“Meow, meow,” Dukee said as he walked to the front of the house.
He meowed one more time and then jumped up onto the bench by the window. As Dukee looked around for a squirrel, Mia snuck up behind him and sniffed his tail.
Dukee looked back and saw Mia as she backed up about a foot.
“What are you doing?” Dukee asked.
“Nothing, I was just going to scare you but you must have heard me,” Mia said.
“No, I didn’t hear you this time but I felt your nose on my tail,” Dukee flicked his tail.
“Oh, I didn’t think of that,” Mia giggled.
“But, why did you want to scare me anyways?” Dukee looked back out the window.
“Well, it is the spook season right?” Mia asked.
“Oh, yeah… And that reminds me that my mom’s book is available now on Amazon. And guess what?” Dukee said and looked back at Mia,
“What?” Mia said.
Tracy and Kim already bought her book.” Dukee said and then scratched his ear.
“You mean my first human moms?” Mia asked.
“Yeah, I guess. They come here once in a while but you always hide,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, I was really young when they took me in so I get scared more now with people I haven’t been around,” Mia said.
“I can understand that if their strangers,” Dukee licked his front paw.
“Yeah, well, we’re all different,” Mia said and walked toward the living room.
“Hey, I’m sorry. I’m not being mean,” Dukee said while he looked toward the other window.
Mia jumped up onto the kitty tower and hopped up and into the tunnel. She saw a lizard as it crept across the ledge outside of the window. Dukee hopped down off the bench and walked over to the side table. He jumped up onto the table and hopped down onto Mia’s litter box cabinet.
“I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings Mia. I didn’t mean to,” Dukee looked at her.
“It’s okay, I know that I’m sensitive sometimes,” Mia said, “I just get nervous about different things.”
“I understand,” Dukee said.
Dukee looked out the window and they both saw a beautiful orange and black butterfly flutter toward them and the window.
“Look, even the butterfly is ready for Halloween,” Dukee said.
Mia giggled, “yes, I guess it is. Can you tell that my Mom is too?”
Dukee looked over at the plastic pumpkins, “yes, yes she is.”
Mia and Dukee were wondering if you were decorating for Halloween yet? Our house loves all the colors that are involved with Autumn and Halloween so we decorate early. What do you think about Autumn and Halloween?

The three hard copies of Spook Season arrived today. Now I have to get a padded envelope to send one on to my sister, Donna Rutterbush. I gave one to Paula and she started reading immediately. The third one I put in the box we collect stuff in to take to Travis and Tanya over in Texas. We'll hand carry those things. I gave a year's gift subscription to your Substack site to my sister yesterday. She has talked about wanting to write a children's book. Don't know if this will give her more encouragement to give it a try or not.
