When Dukee and his mom got up this morning, Dukee got his breakfast and then wanted to see what it was like outside. They both walked to the back sliding glass door and Dukee was let out onto the screened porch.
“I think summer is here already,” Dukee said as he looked around.
It was very warm and quiet outside except for the occasional chirp from a bird. Dukee walked over to the stool that was out there and jumped up onto it. He glanced around the yard and then up at the tree branches but no sign of squirrels yet.
“Mom said she saw squirrels out here yesterday but I don't see any… Oh, there they are,” Dukee said while his mood perked up.
In the house, Mia decided to take a walk into the front living room. She heard the chirps of a couple different birds so she hurried over to the coffee table and jumped up onto it. Many times she will run under part of the kitty tower to spy on the birds but not this time.
Mia peeked out the one side of the window and then crept around the cube part of the kitty tower. She saw a a small bird, maybe a finch, on the bird feeder. She carefully moved in between the cube and the post to watch it.
Mia likes the little birds mostly. They do not seem to be as threatening to her like the bigger birds do. She especially does not care for the black birds or crows. The sound that they make can be very intimidating to her.
Mia made the softest chatter sound to the bird and then a cute little squeak. The bird must not find Mia threatening because it stayed on the feeder and ate. The bird would look around for other predators but did not seem to mind Mia there.
Back outside on the screened porch, Dukee wondered where the squirrels went. He hopped down off the stool and walked over to the sliding glass door. Maybe they went to the front of the house, he thought. Dukee meowed at the door twice and then waited.
Auntie R had just entered the family room and heard Dukee. She looked at the glass door and saw that Dukee wanted to come inside. Auntie R walked over to the door and opened it for Dukee. She said good morning to him and he replied with a meow. But his main focus was to see if the squirrels were in the front yard.
As Dukee hurried through the kitchen and into the dining area, Mia continued to watch the birds. The one flew off but another came down to eat. Dukee peeked out the narrow window by the front door and saw a squirrel nosing around in the grass. He watched it for a minute until something scared it and it ran up the tree.
Dukee then jumped up onto the side table and walked to the end. He looked out the window and then glanced at Mia.
“Hi Mia, did you see any squirrels yet?” Dukee asked her.
“Just that one that ran up the tree so far. Otherwise I have been watching the little birds,” Mia said.
“Oh okay. I was watching a few squirrels chasing each other in the back yard but then they disappeared,” Dukee explained.
“They will probably show up here soon and chase the cute birds away,” Mia said.
Just like that the birds flew off. Mia got down from where she was sitting and went over to her mom. Dukee hopped down onto Mia’s litter box cabinet and laid down to watch the squirrels.
It wasn't long before the squirrels did take over the bird feeder. We have two different feeders now, one near the window and one near the tree but the squirrels are such piggies that they do empty both feeders in a day.
Until next week, Mia and Dukee hope that you all have a beautiful day.
Squirrels don't know how to share, that's all there is to it ! !
