It was early in the morning but Dukee patiently waited for the squirrels to come. He laid at the end of the side table and watched out the window. About five minutes had passed and Mia walked into the living room.
“Are you waiting for squirrels?” Mia asked and then laid down on the rug.
Dukee looked at Mia, “yes but they haven't come yet. I've been here all morning waiting for them.”
“You haven't been there all morning. I was out here a little while ago,” Mia said.
“Well, it feels like I've been here a long time,” Dukee said and then looked back out the window.
Mia licked the top of her paw and then got up to go and eat some of her food. She jumped up onto the coffee table and munched on a few food kernels from her bowl. She then turned around and looked at the window.
“I see one coming,” Mia said.
Dukee waited while Mia crept onto the blanket and closer to the window.
“Don't get to close otherwise it won't come over here,” Dukee said.
“There’s a little lizard here right now,” Mia said while she stared at it and laid down.
“Well a squirrel won't come to the window now,” Dukee said with disappointment.
“I'm sure the one I saw will at least wander the yard,” Mia said.
“But I like, oh there it is,” Dukee said as he watched the squirrel search the grass for an acorn.
“See, I told you,” Mia said as she glanced at the squirrel but then went back to the lizard.
“It’s funny how he eats a nut that he finds and then buries the next one,” Dukee said.
“Do you think he gets back to that nut before another squirrel finds it?” Mia asked.
“That's a good question… To bad there wasn't a way that we could observe that. The squirrels look so similar that it's hard to tell who is who though,” Dukee said and then licked his paw.
“I know… I bet they share though,”Mia said.
“Yes, maybe. But some of them seem as spunky as you though,” Dukee said and then snickered.
Mia looked back at Dukee, “well, us girls need to show that we can't always be pushed around.”
“Oh I understand,” Dukee said.
Dukee knows what it can be like when there is a bully or more aggressive individual around. His adobted younger brother had an attitude at times and tried to bully Dukee. It was for the best in many aspects that we moved here.
Well, it looks like another day of critter watching for Mia and Dukee. When waiting for animals to observe and enjoy, how long do wait for one to show? A few minutes or longer?
Until next week, Mia and Dukee hope that you have a wonderful day.
