Living with two cats that have very different personalities can be entertaining at times. Dukee’s meows and other noises are normally loud. Mia’s meows and other noises are usually very quiet unless she thinks that she is alone. When Mia plays with her little lamb chop toy, her meow can get loud but it is very feminine. Dukee doesn’t mind being petted or stroked and really enjoys cuddling. Mia is the type of cat that allows an occasional pet from you but only when she offers it. Even her mom has to watch the amount of petting times that she gives her.
Mia will play along with us when the laser light is used and sometimes with a toy on a string. But she generally plays by herself with her chosen toy at that time. She loves her Lamb chop toy but most other times she will play with a plastic straw or bottle ring that she confiscated. She even plays with a twisted handle that was cut off a paper bag. Although lately, she has been playing with the stuffed pink peep that I gave her a couple of years ago.
Dukee will play with a mouse on a string when he is in the mood. I try to keep him active since he is older but many times he will do one or two hops and then lay down. He still plays with his toys by himself which is good but he prefers to watch the squirrels when they are around. He sometimes will get Mia to run around the house with him too. Of course Mia thinks that she is in charge of the chase and Dukee is okay with that.
There is also the act of being cute for everyone. You know when the cat rolls over on the back and shows the belly. Unlike a dog, showing the belly is not an invitation for the human hand. If you go in for a tickle of the belly, beware. When Mia plays cute, I tell her that she is a big tease because it is just a game to her. Do not be fooled when she acts cute. When Dukee plays cute, it is usually on a rug so it is more of him saying that the rug feels real good on my back.
But even though cats have different personalities and quirks, they all have the same move to show their human parent that they appreciate them. It is the simple rub up against the leg that they do. This move by the cat let’s the human know that you are part of their world and that they love you for all that you do for them. Some cats will give kisses and some don’t. But they all rub up against the leg. I guess that is sort of like when we humans give hugs. We hug because we care and appreciate the person we hug. Human’s and cats are a different species but affection is still presented.
Until next week, Dukee and Mia hope that you leap into spring soon and enjoy all the critters around you.
