One sunny morning, a tree cutting company came to the house to work on the trees by our house.
“Grrrrrr,” Mia said as she ran past Dukee.
Dukee looked toward the front of the house and saw some men outside in the front yard.
Mia sat by the spare bedroom door wanting to hide when Dukee walked up to her.
“It’s okay Mia, they aren’t coming inside the house,” Dukee said.
“We don’t know that for sure,” Mia looked up at the closed door.
Auntie walked to the small hall where Mia and Dukee were and told them that it was okay, but also opened up the spare room door. Mia ran inside and found a place to hide while Dukee peeked around the hall corner to see the front door. Yeah, they aren’t coming in here, Dukee thought as he watched.
Just then, the owner of the house opened up the screen door and rang the doorbell. Dukee hurried into his room, jumped up onto the desk, and then up onto the tall cabinet. They won’t get me up here, Dukee thought. Auntie answered the door and was asked to move our cars. The tree company had to cut a few more branches off the big tree in the front yard. So, Auntie told Mom and they moved both of the cars out of the way. When Auntie put her keys back in her bedroom she reassured Dukee that everything was okay. I believe you, but I think that I will stay here for a while, Dukee thought.
Auntie and Mom were in the front living room watching the men work on the tree, when surprisingly Mia trotted in to see what was going on. Mom gave Mia some neck rubs and told her that it’s okay. Mia stayed back from the windows but could see and hear the men with the chainsaws. She cautiously watched for a minute or two but then trotted back down the hall and into the spare bedroom. Most of the morning, chainsaws were roaring and large branches thumped the ground when they hit. It was not a usual morning for Dukee and Mia with all the men in the front and the owners in the back pruning trees. Mia was in and out of the rooms waiting for everything to get quiet again.
When early afternoon hit and everyone had left, Auntie and Mom moved their cars back into the driveway. Mia came back out of the spare room and saw that everyone who was outside was gone. Dukee noticed how much quieter things were too so he got up. He arched his back and stretched it. Carefully he jumped down off the cabinet and onto the stool. He walked out of his bedroom and looked down the hallway towards the front door. Hmm, it looks like those people are gone, he thought.
Mia was now lying on the rug by Mom’s chair when she heard Dukee’s toe nail clicking as he walked. She got up and hid behind the one tote by Mom’s chair and waited for Dukee to walk in. Dukee was starring out the narrow window by the door as he walked and didn’t even think about Mia being there. Mia kept quiet but wiggled her tail end. Just as Mia saw Dukee, she darted out in front of him. Dukee stopped suddenly and Mia giggled. Mom even giggled at how silly Mia was being. Dukee glared at her and then Mom, as Mia turned around and walked back to the rug.
Dukee waited for a few seconds to see if Mia would charge at him again but she didn’t. So, he walked up to the narrow window and looked outside. Wow, some of the tree is gone, Dukee thought. While he was looking out the window, Mia walked near her cat carrier that was a few feet away from him. She sat and watched Dukee to see what he was going to do but then she laid down. With all the running in and out of rooms trying to hide from the strangers, Mia was feeling a bit sleepy.
Dukee glanced back and saw Mia lying down so he walked toward the bench in dining area. I’m hungry, I think I’ll get some lunch, Dukee thought. So, he walked around the table and through the kitchen to go to his room. Mia just laid there and put her head down to rest. It was quiet for now but one never knows what might go on inside or outside of the house.
