It was around 7:20 in the morning and Auntie let Dukee outside on the back screened porch. He ran over to the screen door that led to the back yard and slowly put his front paws on the ledge to look out. He kept still and quiet while he watched a squirrel digging around in the grass near the door. Just then, something startled the squirrel and it ran to the Crape Myrtle tree. It climbed up the trunk of the tree and looked around.
Dukee still wanted to watch the squirrel to see what else it was going to do but he had to adjust how he was sitting by the door. Dukee peeked over the ledge on the door and saw the squirrel was now facing the other direction.
“Okay, now is my chance to move over to the stool,” Dukee said as he darted over to it.
Before he jumped up onto the stool, Dukee put one front paw on it and then peeked at the squirrel. The squirrel was still clinging to the trunk of the tree and facing the other direction. Dukee then jumped up onto the step stool and sat still.
In the house, Mia walked into the family room and decided to see what Dukee was doing. She knew that he was outside because she heard the sliding door earlier. Mia walked over to the wingback chair near the sliding glass door and sat down. She saw Dukee but also saw a couple of birds flying around by the fence. Mia watched as the one bird flew down toward the squirrel and then back up into the air. Mia and Dukee both listened to the squirrel as it chattered at the bird. I wonder what is going on with that bird, Mia thought. The other bird then flew down at the squirrel on the tree, and then back up again.
“I didn’t see that squirrel do anything wrong to those birds,” Dukee said as he watched.
When the two birds finally flew away, the squirrel ran back down the tree and out into the grass.
“Hmm, that was strange,” Mia said.
Mia observed Dukee sitting on the stool for a moment and then glanced around the back yard before she walked away. Mia suddenly had the munchies and also wanted to see what might be going on outside in the front yard. She glanced toward grandpa’s bedroom and then trotted into the kitchen. She stopped by the refrigerator and looked underneath it before going into the dining area. Mia then stopped by the narrow window by the front door and looked out it. She saw a lizard on the screen porch floor and chattered at it. The lizard ran up the screen at the front of the porch and then stopped.
Before moving on, Mia chattered at the lizard one more time. Then she took a shortcut by hopping up onto the bottom shelf of the side table and squeezing past the ends of her litter box cabinet and the leather sofa. She trotted over to the coffee table and jumped up onto it to get something to eat. She had her special chicken and tuna breakfast earlier but now she was ready for some of her dry food.
While Mia was munching on her food, she heard someone in the family room. She turned around and looked to see if anyone was coming into the front living room. Nope, it must be Auntie, she thought when she heard the sliding door open and close. Mia went back to eating while Dukee walked through the family room, down the hallway, and stopped. He stopped before he walked into the living room because he saw Mia.
Mia turned around chewing the kernels that were in her mouth and then asked, “Is it nice outside?”
Dukee walked over to the side table and jumped up onto it, “yes, it’s very nice outside.”
Mia walked over to the kitty tower and jumped up onto the top of it. Dukee looked over at her as he sat down on the end of the table. They both noticed a squirrel rummaging through the grass and then munching on whatever it found.
“So what do you think was going on with those two birds in the back yard?” Mia asked.
Dukee looked at Mia, “oh, you saw that?”
“Yes, I was watching out the sliding door,” Mia said.
“Oh… Yeah, I’m not sure what they were doing. As far as I know the squirrel didn’t doing any harm to them,” Dukee said. “You know, I’ve seen a bird do that to another bird before too.”
“Hmm, I wonder why,” Mia said.
“Yeah, it’s a mystery to me,” Dukee glanced up at the sky.
Mia and Dukee sat their in the front living room and watched the squirrels as they ran in and out of the yard. Different birds such as Robins and Sparrows would fly in and out of the tree. It was another beautiful and sunny morning with a lot of critter activity. A day to just relax and enjoy what God has put in front of us.
