It was around seven in the morning when Mia peeked out of her bedroom doorway at Auntie. Auntie stood by the chaise lounge chair and suggested to Mia’s mom to look out her bedroom window. I wonder what’s out there, Mia thought. Mia trotted over to her mom as she got out of bed and then looked out the window. Mia jumped up onto the window sill and saw the fairly large animal on the other side of the fence. Mia hopped down because she was unsure but then stood up with her front paws on the window sill and peeked out.
Mom told Mia that it was just a deer and that it won’t get her. Mia jumped back up onto the window sill and watched as two more deer slowly showed themselves. The deer like the neighbors yard because of the fruit trees that they have and the easy access to the water canal in the back. Mia watched them as they gracefully walked around and looked up into the trees for fruit. But unfortunately there wasn’t any fruit yet. Then, as the sky started to lighten up, the deer carefully made their way down to the canal. When Mia and Mom could no longer see the deer, Mia figured that it was time to run and play.
Mia ran out of their bedroom, through the family room and into the front living room. Dukee was sleeping quietly until he heard the sudden galloping of Mia’s feet run past his room. Auntie was sitting near Dukee on their bed watching television when Dukee woke up. Dukee looked around and wondered what was going on. Auntie told him that it was just Mia. Dukee got up and arched his back with a big stretch. It was breakfast time now that he and Auntie were awake.
While Mia was in the living room, she hopped up onto the coffee table and got a drink of water. Mom didn’t show up yet so Mia wondered where she was. Mia hopped down and then walked toward the hall. She heard Auntie and Dukee in their bedroom as she walked past and decided to be funny. Instead of going to check on her mom, Mia climbed around behind the statue of the boxer dog, Buffie and waited.
When Auntie and Dukee walked out into the family room, Mia sat quiet and still. Auntie walked with Dukee over to the sliding glass door to see if he wanted to go out onto the back porch. When Auntie opened the door, a cool breeze blew in. Nope, I don’t think so, Dukee thought. Auntie closed the door when Dukee walked around the wingback chair. When Auntie went back to her room, Dukee walked over to the cardboard barn and sat down by it.
Mia started to giggle while Dukee sat there. He looked toward Mia’s bedroom but didn’t see her. But when she twitched her ears, Dukee noticed the movement.
Dukee snickered at Mia, “what are you doing?” He asked.
“I was wondering how long it would take for you to notice me,” Mia carefully climbed over the statue.
“I might not have if you weren’t giggling,” Dukee said.
“Well, I couldn’t help myself. I watched you walk past the barn and then sit down right there,” Mia said.
“Well, I don’t think that I’m fully awake yet. You woke me up when you ran past my room,” Dukee yawned.
“Oh, sorry, I thought you were up since Auntie was up already,” Mia said. “So, you didn’t see the deer then?”
“Deer? No, where?” Dukee asked.
“In the neighbor’s backyard. Auntie saw them and told Mom earlier,” Mia said.
“Nope… I saw Auntie get up and look out the window but then I went back to sleep,” Dukee said.
“Oh, well there was three of them. They were pretty too,” Mia said as she walked toward her bedroom.
Dukee watched as Mia walked into her room through the slightly open door. Then he stood up and walked into his bedroom to see what Auntie was doing. She was already on her laptop and writing. Well, it’s too cool to go outside so I might as well cuddle with Auntie, Dukee thought.
