Mia and Dukee were in the front living room looking out the window when two birds landed on separate branches of the tree.
“Hey, is that Carrie and Harold?” Dukee said to Mia.
“Yes, I think it is… Oh look, she sees us,” Mia said.
Carrie the cardinal lifted her right wing as if she waved quickly. Then Mia and Dukee heard Carrie chirp something to Harold. Harold chirped something back and then flew off. Carrie then flew down to the flower bed and hopped and jumped up onto the window ledge.
Mia inched forward in her tunnel a little bit and Dukee just sat on the end of the table.
Carrie stood by the window and looked in, “hi kids, how have you been?”
“I'm doing good,” Mia said.
“Yeah, me too. How about you? Is everything alright with you and Harold?” Dukee asked.
“Oh yes we're good. Harold just reminded me that we have something that we don’t want to be late for. So I can only chat for a minute with you,” Carrie said and then caressed her feathers with her beak.
“Well, your color sure is pretty and more vibrant,” Mia said.
“Oh thank you Mia. One of your newer neighbors put out a very nice and clean bird bath. So, Harold and I use it often,” Carrie said.
“Yes, I noticed that Harold's red color was brighter as well,” Dukee said.
“It is so refreshing to get a clean bath once in awhile,” Carrie said, “that leads me to where we are headed when I leave here.
“Where are you going?” Dukee asked.
“One of our children had another baby girl so we are flying a few miles north to see them. I am so excited for them.”
“Awe, I bet she is cute,” Mia said.
“Well, baby birds aren’t always the cutest at first but I know that we will love her just the same,” Carrie said.
“Are you going to visit just for today or stay over night?” Dukee asked.
“We’re going to stay the night and come back home later tomorrow morning,” Carrie said, “which means I must be going now because I know that Harold is probably waiting. You two be good now and it was good to see you again.”
“Okay Carrie, I know I will be good,” Dukee said and snickered.
“Bye Carrie, have a nice time,” Mia said.
“Bye bye,” Carrie said and flew up and away from the window.
Mia and Dukee watched as Carrie flew over the palm tree in the neighbors yard and then disappeared down the street.
“Wow, another new birdie… I can see Carrie now feeding worms to the new baby,” Mia said.
“So, if it’s a girl, it will look like Carrie, right?” Dukee asked.
“Yes, I think I remember her saying that the females are more orange than red,” Mia said.
“Oh, okay… Yeah, they are pretty too,” Dukee said as he got up and turned around.
Mia stayed in the tunnel part of the kitty tower while Dukee hopped down off the side table. It was an enjoyable visit from a friend who they hadn’t seen in awhile. And it’s nice to know that most birds can have families fairly easy. After all, who doesn’t like birds? I think they can be fascinating and beautiful creatures.
