Dukee was laying on the bench by the window and watching a squirrel. Mia saw Dukee’s tail flopping back and forth so it made her curious. She walked over to the bench and hesitated whether to or not to hop up there by him. After about a minute, she decided and carefully jumped up onto the bench next to Dukee. Mia looked at Dukee and he also looked at her.
“Are you going to lay down before you scare the squirrels away?” Dukee asked her.
Mia plopped down on her belly, “yes, but I didn’t know if you would be okay with me here so close to you.”
“Well with those pumpkins there, I understand why you have to lay so close,” Dukee said.
“Okay good, because it’s not like I want to lay this close to you,” Mia said.
Dukee Snickered, “well as feisty as you get sometimes, I don’t care to lay this close to you that often either. But can we watch the squirrels now?”
Mia and Dukee watched as a third squirrel now scurried into the yard. One of the others ran at that squirrel and chased it around the tree. A minute later, they both ran up the trunk of the tree and then stopped.
“You know, I guess I am feisty a lot more then I need to be,” Mia said, “it’s just a natural defense that comes out of me.”
“Oh I understand that, but you can settle down because I won’t hurt you,” Dukee said, “I just need to remember that you’re a girl.”
“Yes, and I’m smaller than you,” Mia said.
“Yes, that too.”
Dukee flipped and flopped his tail once again while watching the squirrels. He even swung it so hard to the left that Mia felt the breeze from it.
“Can you calm your tail down though?” Mia asked.
Dukee looked over at her, “why, what’s wrong?”
“The breeze that you make with your tail moves my fur and makes me feel as if something is crawling on me,” she explained.
“Oh, sorry,” Dukee snickered and then looked back out the window.
Dukee knows after living with Mia for four years now that she has her moods and is more sensitive to certain things. He tries to respect her and her space most of the time, but sometimes he just likes to toy with her. Dukee held his tail still for about a minute or so and waited. When he saw that Mia was intently watching one of the squirrels as it got closer to the flower bed, he lifted his tail and plopped it down hard.
Mia jumped, “hey, you startled me… You did that on purpose too,” Mia growled.
Dukee snickered, quickly got up and hopped down off the bench. He ran over to the side table and jumped up onto it. He snickered again but then looked out that window for squirrels.
“That wasn’t funny,” Mia called out.
“Yes it was,” Dukee said as he watched one of the squirrels walk into the neighbors yard.
Mia stayed on the bench by the other window because she still had a couple of squirrels in her view. Dukee lost sight of the squirrel that he was watching so after a few minutes, he got down from the table. He walked toward the hallway and laid down. Mia started to bathe herself where she laid and occasionally looked out the window. The squirrels after all were starting to bore her. She likes to watch them for a little while but prefers to stare and chatter at a lizard longer.
It is funny how animals differ from each other. Just like humans they have their own likes and dislikes and preferences. Well, Mia and Dukee will probably be watching trick or treater’s come and go on Halloween. What will you be doing this year? Whatever it might be, stay safe and have fun. Happy Halloween everyone.
Ohhhhh, this story had me laughing even more than other times 😄 !
