Mia ran as fast as she could from her bedroom, through the family room, down the hallway, and into the front living room. She jumped up onto the leather sofa that separated the living room from the isle to the front door and then down to the floor again. As Mia plopped down and breathed heavily, Dukee walked into the room, stopped at the end of the sofa, and looked at her.
“Getting a little exercise again?” Dukee asked.
“Yep, it’s invigorating,” Mia said.
Dukee snickered, walked over to the side table, and then jumped up onto it. Mia looked back at Dukee as he walked to the end of the table and looked out the window. After about a minute, Mia got up and jumped up onto the kitty tower. She climbed into the tunnel part of it and looked outside.
“After trying to be quiet while everyone sleeps, I like to sometimes run around to get my energy going,” Mia said.
“Yes, I can understand that. I prefer running just after everyone goes to bed. It seems to help me sleep,” Dukee said as he looked at Mia.
“Yes, I noticed that,” Mia said.
“Well, it all started where Auntie and I used to live. My little adopted brother and I would chase each other through the house after Auntie went to bed,” Dukee said.
“Whatever happened to him?” Mia asked.
“Oh, my little brother? He stayed with my dad. Auntie showed me a picture of my little brother just the other day,” Dukee said.
“How is he?” Mia asked.
“Okay I guess. He looked like his silly self,” Dukee watched the bird fly down onto the grass.
“Do you ever miss him?” Mia asked.
“Well, sometimes the playing together, but otherwise no. He would get mean sometimes and try and bully me. I didn’t like that,” Dukee licked the top of his paw.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t like that either. To be bullied,” Mia looked back out the window.
Just then, four large birds came from down the street and walked into the front yard.
“Hey, we have turkey’s again,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, I hadn’t seen them in a while,” Mia watched as they pecked at the ground.
“I wonder why they only visit the front yard? Sometime I’d like to see them up close in the back yard,” Dukee said.
“Maybe it’s because of the fence that I see in the back yard,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Oh yeah, that’s right. But don’t they fly?” Dukee asked.
“Maybe not as much as a smaller bird. I’m mean look how big they are. That’s a big body to lift off the ground,” Mia said.
“Yes, that’s true,” Dukee said as he watched the turkeys head back to the road.
It was a beautifully sunny day outside and many of the critters were enjoying it. Mia started to chatter at a green anole as it moved across the screen that surrounded the front porch. Dukee enjoyed watching the two squirrels as one chased the other up the tree. They both enjoy the simplicity of watching the critters outside. Whatever it is that you are doing this weekend, Mia and Dukee want to remind you to try and find the time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and the wildlife that God has given us all.
