Mia and Dukee were sitting near the sliding glass door wondering what Auntie was doing.
“What did Mom say to Auntie?” Mia asked.
“She said something about a deer. So, I guess she’s outside looking for it,” Dukee said.
“Oh, so we missed them huh?” Mia looked out into the back yard.
“I think so, because I don’t see any,” Dukee looked back at Mia.
When Auntie opened the sliding door to come in, Dukee walked out onto the back porch. Mia turned around and went to her bedroom to see what her mom was doing. Mia meowed softly as she walked into her room, what are you doing Mom, she thought. She jumped up onto the marble window sill and looked up at her mom. While Mom was standing there looking out the window Mia nudged her hand. Are you looking for the deer, Mia thought while she nudged her mom’s hand again.
Mom looked down at Mia and pet her before turning around and leaving their bedroom. Mia hopped down and followed Mom out of the room. But before Mom even got to the hallway, Mia ran fast past her and into the front living room. She stopped and turned around quick to see if Mom was behind her. When Mom entered the front living room, Mia plopped down in front of her and rolled over. As Mom tried to walk around her, Mia grabbed onto her slipper sock.
Hey, Mom said to her as she tried to take a step. Mia held onto her mom’s slipper sock for about thirty seconds before she let go and rolled over again. When Mom sat down in her chair, Mia sprung to her feet and ran as fast as she could down the hallway and into her bedroom. She stopped in her room and decided to play with the marbles on the base of her scratch post.
Dukee was still outside on the back screened porch watching two squirrels. One squirrel was near the screen door while the other was near the Crape Myrtle tree. Dukee sat on the step stool and watched as they both were nibbling on something that they undug from the ground. As Dukee sat there, suddenly a lizard jumped up onto the screen right in front of him.
“Hello there my friend,” Larry the lizard said.
“Well, hi Larry, how have you been?” Dukee looked at him.
“I’ve been very well thank you, but I’m looking forward to spring when all the young bugs start to come out,” Larry said.
“The young bugs? Why?” Dukee cocked his head.
“Oh, that’s right, you don’t eat bugs,” Larry laughed.
“No, I don’t… So, what is so special about young bugs?” Dukee asked.
“Well, to me they seem a little sweeter than the older adult bugs,” Larry said.
“ I guess that makes sense, the fresher the better,” Dukee said.
“Yes, exactly… So, anything new going on with you here?” Larry asked.
“No, not really. Mia still doesn’t like to play with me as much as I would like her too,” Dukee said.
“She’s a girl right?” Larry asked.
“Yes,” Dukee itched his neck.
“Well, females can be funny. It’s almost like they have to be in the right mood for everything,” Larry explained.
“You know, you’ve got something there. I noticed that with Auntie too. Sometimes when I want her to play with me, she says that she’s busy,” Dukee said.
“Yep, my wife says the same thing,” Larry said.
Dukee looked up towards the sky as two birds flew over. Larry noticed that and turned to look at the sky. He saw the birds as they flew away and then told Dukee that he has to be careful with some birds.
“Yeah some birds enjoy a nice juicy lizard such as myself. So when birds fly over me, I have to be real still,” Larry said.
“That has to be a scary way to live,” Dukee said.
“Sometimes… But it’s not much different than anyone else. You have to make sure that you don’t get hit by a car when your outside,” Larry explained.
“I don’t usually go all the way outside but I understand what you’re saying,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, it’s just being aware of your surroundings at all times,” Larry looked around. “Well, Dukee, I’m going to get moving, but I’ll see you again soon. Be patient with Mia, she’ll come around,” Larry hopped down to the grass.
Dukee moved his face close to the screen, “okay Larry, you take care.”
“See ya Dukee,” Larry said as he scurried through the grass to the corner of the house.
Dukee watched Larry until he disappeared around the side of the house, “It was good to see one of our friends again.
Just as Dukee hopped down off of the stool, Auntie walked up to the glass door to check on him. Dukee meowed when he saw her and walked inside when she opened the door. Auntie bent down and pet Dukee before she went back to her bedroom. Before Dukee went into their bedroom, he walked to the front living room to see if Mia was there but she wasn’t. I guess I’ll tell her who I talked to later, Dukee thought.
