Dukee sat on the bench looking out the front window when Mia walked up behind him. She sat down on the floor at the corner of the bench and sniffed his orange and white tail.
“Hey, what are you doing?” Dukee asked as he looked back at Mia.
“I’m not doing anything. I only sniffed your tail,” Mia said.
Dukee flicked his tail and tapped Mia on the head with it.
“Hey, watch it,” Mia said as she got up and turned around.
“Well, next time leave my tail alone,” Dukee snickered.
Mia walked over to one of the narrow windows by the front door and looked out it. She saw two squirrels running around the tree in the front yard. Dukee hopped down off the bench, walked through the kitchen, and into the family room. He made his way up to the sliding glass door and meowed. Oh, it sounds like Dukee wants to go outside, Mia thought. Dukee only had to sit there by the door a minute or two before Auntie walked over to him and let him out onto the screened back porch.
Mia then walked over to the bench and jumped up onto it. She sniffed around where Dukee was sitting and then laid down. Just as she did, one of the squirrels crept over carefully to the small concrete fish bowl that sat in the flower bed. Mia flattened her body down and lowered her ears as she watched the squirrel drink some water out of the fish bowl. I don’t want to scare the squirrel away, she thought as she inched a little closer to the window.
Out on the back screened porch, Dukee hopped up onto the utility stool that is out there. There was a slight breeze blowing through so Dukee sniffed the air. Smells like frogs, he thought as he sniffed again. While Dukee was looking out into the yard, he heard the neighbors Rottweiler dog barking. Dukee glanced across the canal and saw the dog running from one side of its yard to the other. I’m so happy that Auntie and Mom don’t have a dog. All they seem to do is bark, Dukee thought. Dukee sat and watched as the dog barked and barked, and ran back and forth. The dog must have done that three times. Well, it does get it’s exercise, Dukee thought.
Back inside the house, Mia watched the squirrel as it dug for nuts in the flower bed. But when Mom walked into the front living room, Mia hopped down and trotted over to her. Mia rubbed up against her moms leg and then trotted over to the fireplace. Mia backed her back end up onto the base of the fireplace and wiggled it. This was the sign that she wanted Mom to pick up the laser light. So, that’s what Mom did. She moved the red laser light around on the floor and then over to the rug that was about four feet away from Mia. Mia wiggled and jumped the four feet across the floor to reach the red light.
While Mom zoomed the red light around in a circle on the rug, Mia chased after it. After a few laps in a circle, Mia plopped down. As Mia breathed heavily, she thought, okay, it’s time to rest. But it was only about three minutes and Mia was ready to go again. She got up and ran back to the fireplace. Mom shined the laser light back on the floor a few feet away from Mia and moved it back and forth. Mia got into position and watched the red light. I’m going to get you, Mia thought as she watched the light on the floor.
But, before Mia would chase the red light again, she heard Auntie with the sliding glass door. Mia looked toward the hallway and waited to see if Auntie or Dukee would walk into the front living room. About a minute passed and Auntie walked in to see what Mom was doing. Mia jumped and ran over to Auntie and then sniffed her foot. Dukee was a few feet behind Auntie and stopped when he saw Mia run toward her. Mia stared at Dukee for a few seconds and then turned away. Dukee sat down and just watched Mia.
Mia then plopped down on the floor about a foot away from Auntie’s feet and rolled around. It was time to play cute and innocent. Too bad everyone in the living room knew that being innocent is not always the case with Princess Mia.
