Dukee Was in the living room rolling around on the rug when Mia crept in. Quietly she snuck around the end of the sofa and giggled at him.
“Hee hee, what are you doing?” Mia asked.
Dukee stopped but stayed laying there while he looked at Mia, “sometimes a rug feels so good to roll around on. Don't you ever roll around on a rug?”
“Yes, but I prefer the bare floor,” Mia said.
“Yes, I have noticed that you squirm a lot on the floor. I also noticed that you clunk your head a lot too. Why do you do that?” Dukee asked.
“Oh, well I don't do that on purpose, I guess I just misjudge the distance between my head and the floor,” Mia said.
Dukee rolled over and laid on his side while Mia walked over to the coffee table. She jumped up onto it and walked over to her food bowl. While Mia crunched on some of her food, Dukee thought about the past few days.
“I think my mom is done with her strange work schedule now,” Dukee said.
Mia finished the couple of kernels in her mouth while she turned and looked at Dukee, “um, yeah, what was that all about? She was going out the door when it was still dark out.”
“Yeah, she said it was for inventory. Whatever that means. All I know is that the third morning I didn't even wake up with her, I was too tired,” Dukee said.
Mia hopped down off the coffee table and sat down a few feet away from Dukee. She licked around her mouth and then said, “why were you so tired, she's the one who had to go to work.”
“I know that but I wasn't quite sure what was going on so it worried me a little,” Dukee said.
Mia thought for a minute, “I can understand that. We get so used to things the way that they are that a sudden change can be alarming when we really don't understand it.”
Dukee sat up and looked at Mia, “you're getting pretty smart for your age Mia. You nailed it exactly,” Dukee said.
Mia sat up straight and felt proud that someone much older than her complimented her intelligence. Even if it was just Dukee.
“So what makes you think that her strange schedule is done?” Mia asked.
“Well, she said inventory was done, and she's been home trying to catch up on her sleep,” Dukee said and then got up to walk out of the room.
“Oh, that makes sense then. It sure was interesting though hearing her up and out the door that early,” Mia said.
“Yeah, it was even before you got your breakfast,” Dukee snickered.
“Yes it was except for the one day. Mom got up to use the bathroom and say goodbye to her so she figured she'd give me my breakfast too,” Mia said.
“Oh yeah, I do remember that… You know, I guess we never exactly know when changes in life are going to happen. It's up to us to understand how we want to handle them,” Dukee said.
Mia followed Dukee and then stopped, “wise words from an old man.”
Dukee stopped and looked back at Mia, “old huh? You remember that the next time I chase you.”
Dukee continued on toward his bedroom. While Mia giggled and then went back to her food bowl.
