Dukee and Mia where in the front living room watching the birds, lizards and squirrels. During this summer they have seen young ones emerge from many critter families. And then with the new bird feeder outside the window, the critter activity on it has been frequent.
“I like watching all the squirrels come and climb up on that bird feeder,” Dukee said.
“I do too but then you run to the window and chase them away. What’s the point of that?” Mia said.
Dukee looked back at Mia, “I guess I just get excited because they are so close to us.”
“Well, can you try and control your excitement once in awhile? I like to watch them sit up and nibble,” Mia said and then licked her right paw.
“I’ll try but it won’t be easy,” Dukee turned back towards the window.
The two of them spotted a squirrel up in the tree and watched as it slowly crawled down the trunk of the tree. Dukee lowered his head and observed the squirrels every move. Mia laid there on the kitty tower and watched as the squirrel carefully crept across the grass and over to the flower bed. Dukee’s tail flicked with anticipation while Mia just stared at it.
“It’s coming closer,” Dukee said.
“Hold it steady,” Mia reminded him.
The young squirrel climbed up the pole of the bird feeder halfway and glanced back at Dukee through the window.
“Don’t move,” Mia said to Dukee.
They both watched as the squirrel moved up the pole a little further and then stopped.
“I want to chase it,” Dukee whispered.
“Don’t,” Mia said, “you can’t get it anyway.”
“That’s true,” Dukee said and laid still.
The squirrel continued on and made it to the top of the pole and climbed down onto the roof of the bird feeder. Dukee then crept about an inch closer to the window and waited. Mia watched as the squirrel looked down over the roof and wondered how it would get to the tray the feeder. She’s seen other squirrels struggled to reach the seed tray while others got there with not to much of a problem at all. The squirrel looked through the window again toward Dukee and then back down at the seed tray.
When the squirrel tried to swing itself down over the roof of the bird feeder, it stumbled and nearly fell off the tray. Mia noticed how Dukee was positioned and reminded him to hold still. He did and the squirrel was able to find a few nuts that it enjoyed and sat up to eat them.
“See isn’t it cute when the squirrel sits like that to eat?” Mia said to Dukee.
“Yes it is but I still have the urge to chase it,” Dukee said.
Mia rolled her eyes and just like that, when the squirrel jumped to the pole, Dukee rushed the window. The squirrel fell off the pole and then ran up the tree. Dukee looked at the squirrel up in the tree and then turned back around and sat down.
“You just couldn’t help yourself, could you?” Mia said.
“No, I couldn’t,” Dukee said as he glanced back at Mia.
Mia laid back inside of the cube and said, “critter watching with you is exhausting.”
“I'm sorry. I'll try harder next time,” Dukee said.
It is interesting how cats react differently to things that they see or hear. Another example would be; Mia does not like the sound of thunder whereas it doesn't usually bother Dukee. Unless there is a loud crack of thunder that rattles all of us. Animals are very interesting and I am happy that our world is full of them.
Until next week, Mia and Dukee hope that you have a great day.
