It was a morning of critter watching for Mia and Dukee. Mia was in the front living room watching lizards while Dukee was in his bedroom watching some crows. Lately for some reason a few crows like to hang out in the next door neighbors backyard. Dukee watched as one of the crows walked around in the grass along the side yard fence.
“If I was outside, I would chase you into the air,” Dukee said as he peered out the window.
The crow just walked back and forth along the fence as if it wanted to come into our yard. It was to big to squeeze through the holes in the fence. But before the crow could fly up and over, another one landed in our yard. It walked over to the first crow on the other side of the fence and squawked at it. Dukee meowed then and chattered at the two crows, but they didn’t seem to care that he was there.
On the window sill in the front living room, Mia watched and quietly chattered at a brown lizard. The lizard moved along the window ledge and then stopped and looked up at her. Mia chattered a little louder at the lizard before something across the street caught her eye.
“What is that?” Mia said and watched.
Just then, she could make out what it was as it slithered onto the road. It was a black snake about three feet long. Mia watched it as it crossed the road and slithered into the grass on the other side. Once she could no longer see the snake, Mia turned her focus back onto the lizard. She looked down at the lizard and saw it’s eye blink.
“Are you really watching me lizard?” Mia cocked her head.
Mia noticed that the lizard cocked its head after she cocked hers, “you are watching me aren’t you?”
Just then, the lizard saw a tiny little bug up on the window screen. Mia noticed it too and slowly reached up and touched the glass. The little bug flew off the screen and then fluttered in front of Mia. The lizard watched the little bug and then slowly crept onto the screen. Mia watched the lizard as it carefully moved closer to the bug.
“Watch out little bug, something is coming after you.” Mia said.
Before the lizard could get close enough to the bug, it flew away from the window. Mia watched as the bug flew down near the flowers.
“Wow, I guess it heard me,” Mia giggled.
Just like that, the lizard looked at Mia through the screen and then jumped down into the flower bed. He must really be hungry, Mia thought. When Mia heard her Mom walking into the family room, she hurried across her blanket and down to the floor. If Mom is up then maybe she will play laser light with me, Mia thought.
Meanwhile, Dukee was still on the stool in his bedroom and yawned. Should I take a nap or go outside, he thought. As Dukee yawned again… Yeah, I think I’ll take a nap. Dukee laid his chin down on his right paw and slowly closed his eyes. After all, the crows flew away and there wasn’t anything else to watch right now.
Mia got her Mom to play with her with the laser light for a few minutes so she was happy. Mom would move the red dot all over the floor before Mia would finally chase it into a circle. After going around and around three to four times, Mia would finally plop down. Okay, time to rest her Mom would say. Mia then rolled over on her side, stretched her legs out, and closed her eyes.
Whatever it is that you plan on doing this weekend, Mia and Dukee wish for you to have some fun.
