Mia was by the front window staring at a baby lizard. She chattered softly at it and then paused. All of a sudden the baby lizard made a quiet chirp sound right back. Mia’s ears perked up and she chattered at it again. The lizard once again chirped. This interaction surprised Mia.
Just then Dukee walked into the room and jumped up onto the side table. He walked to the end and saw Mia laying there and looking at him.
“Oh, hi,” Dukee said.
“You got to hear this. I think this baby lizard is talking with me,” Mia said.
Dukee watched Mia as she softly chattered at the lizard. A few seconds later the lizard chirped again.
“Did you hear that?” Mia asked him.
“Yes I did. Do you understand it?” Dukee asked.
“No, but it's cool that it's trying to talk to me,” Mia said.
“Yeah and it's so small too,” Dukee said and then licked the top of his paw.
“It’s actually sort of cute,” Mia said.
Dukee watched the lizard a couple more minutes until he saw a squirrel run across the electric wire. The squirrel stopped and looked around but then continued to the pole. Mia then saw the squirrel as it scurried down the pole. Dukee crouched down on the table and waited for it to come into the grass. He waited and waited but he didn't see the squirrel. Dukee sat back up and looked around the blinds.
“Where did that squirrel go?” Dukee asked Mia.
“I don't know. I saw it go towards my mom's car,” Mia said.
“Oh, I was waiting for it to come to that bird feeder,” Dukee said.
Dukee glanced around but didn't see another squirrel.
“Hey, did you know that tomorrow is your first human mom's birthday?”
“My first human mom? Oh, you mean the one who rescued me?” Mia said.
“Yep. She's also your now mom's daughter,” Dukee said.
“Oh okay. She comes over here sometimes,” Mia said.
“Yes, her. I think that we should wish her a happy birthday don't you think?” Dukee said.
“Sure, okay,”Mia said and then sat up and cleared her throat.
Dukee cleared his throat and then thought for a moment, “we're doing it again.”
“Doing what?” Mia asked.
“This is a written story. Why are we clearing our throats?” Dukee said.
Mia started to giggle which got Dukee giggling. They tried to stop but it led to laughing. After a couple of minutes of uncontrollable laughter, they both tried to compose themselves.
“Okay, okay, I got this,”Mia said.
Dukee shook his head in an attempt to calm himself, “okay. I'm just going to say it. Happy Birthday Tracy.”
“Her name is Tracy?” Mia asked.
“Yeah, you didn't know that?” Dukee asked.
“Well I always heard the name but never connected it with her,” Mia said and then licked the fur on her side.
“Oh, yeah, my mom mentions her all the time,” Dukee said.
“Well, have a happy birthday Tracy,” Mia said… “Oh look, another lizard.”
Sometimes a cat's focus on critters seems more important then anything else. But Mia and Dukee want to wish Tracy a very happy birthday tomorrow. You might be working but try and have fun anyway.
As for the rest of you, have a great week and weekend and we'll be here next week.
I love this story !!!!!! It made me laugh right along with Dukee and Mia !!
