It was fairly early in the morning and the house was still pretty quiet. Dukee was in the front living room sitting on the side table, and looking out the window. A couple of white Ibis birds walked into the front yard and pecked at whatever was in the grass. While Dukee was chattering at the birds and focused on them, Mia walked into the room.
“What’s out there?” She asked.
“Those white birds again,” Dukee said as he watched them.
Mia was feeling a little ornery and rambunctious so quickly she jumped up onto the leather sofa and swatted at Dukee’s tail.
Dukee quickly looked back at Mia, “hey, watch my tail.”
“I was and that’s why I hit it,” Mia said and hopped down.
“What’s wrong with you this morning? Did you have a bad night?” Dukee watched Mia as she jumped up onto the kitty tower.
“No, I just feel a little grumpy,” Mia looked out the front window.
“Well, don’t take it out on me… Run around or something,” Dukee said and looked out the window again.
Mia chattered a little bit at the birds and then turned and walked onto the coffee table to get a drink of water. Dukee watched the Ibis as they crossed the street and continued into the grass down the road.
“Oh, guess who stopped by my window last night?” Mia walked back over to the kitty tower.
“Who?” Dukee looked at her.
Mia licked the water droplets from around her mouth and said, “Rafael. He told me that he found himself a girlfriend.”
“Oh, so that’s why you are grumpy this morning,” Dukee said.
“No… I could care less if he has a girlfriend or not,” Mia climbed up into the tunnel part of the kitty tower.
“Come on, you like it when he flirts with you,” Dukee said.
“No I don’t. Besides, I don’t need someone like him anyway,” Mia said.
“I don’t care what you say, I can tell that you’re jealous,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“No I’m not. I’m happy that he found someone special. After all, he doesn’t have anyone else who can annoy him like I already do,” Mia glared at Dukee.
“Oh, I annoy you? Who’s the one hitting my tail or my butt all the time?” Dukee said.
“I don’t do it all the time… Only when I feel like it,” Mia giggled.
Dukee stared at Mia for a minute and then shook his head, “the things I put up with in my life.”
Mia giggled again and then looked back out the window… “Rafael said that he’s trying to get his humans to bring his girlfriend into their house.”
“Oh yeah, doesn’t she have a human already?” Dukee asked.
“I don’t know, I didn’t ask,” Mia said.
“Well, I know that I was happy when Auntie took me in. I didn’t like the idea of being put outside and not knowing when I was going to be able to eat,” Dukee licked his front paw.
“What do you mean?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Well, this lady brought me to her place and showed me inside and all, but then she would put me outside with no food or water,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Wow, that’s not nice,” Mia said.
“I know… One day when I was meowing by the ladies door to go in, I heard some guy on the ground floor talking to another human so I meowed even louder,” Dukee said.
“Then what happened?” Mia asked.
“That guy that smelled like pizza picked me up, carried me down the stairs, and then handed me to Auntie,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, you told me part of that before, but I didn’t know that the lady left you with nothing to eat or drink,” Mia said as she looked at Dukee again.
“Yeah, it was a scary feeling being left outside at a strange place. But that’s why I’m grateful for Auntie,” Dukee said.
“Didn’t that other lady ever wonder what happened to you?” Mia asked.
Dukee looked at Mia, “well, one day I overheard her talking to Auntie and my dad at the time, by the front door. She asked if they took me inside and said that it’s probably for the best. She also said that she didn’t even know why she brought me to her place since she knew that she was hardly ever home.”
“It sounds to me that you and Auntie were meant to be together,” Mia said.
“Yes, I think that too,” Dukee looked back outside and watched as a yellow and black butterfly fluttered over the flower bed.
“Life can be confusing at times,” Mia said.
“Yes, you got that right,” Dukee itched his neck.
