Dukee laid with his moms shoes and looked at her. You’re not going anywhere, he thought. Auntie told him that she was only going to be gone for a couple of hours.
When Auntie left the room to talk to her dad, Dukee got up to follow. But, when Dukee looked down the hallway, Mia was at the front of the house playing with her toy.
Dukee walked down the hallway towards Mia and said, “looks like they're going shopping again,”
“My mom already left,” Mia said.
“Oh, she did?”
“Yep, she had something else she had to do,” Mia said before she ran behind the coffee table.
Dukee heard his poppa's footsteps and looked at his mom when she entered the room.
“We'll be back in a little while,” Auntie said to Dukee.
Dukee moved out of the way for poppa's big feet and watched them both go out the front door.
As the door closed and Dukee watched them leave the front porch, he said to Mia, “They're gone.”
Mia walked out from behind the coffee table and back to the main walkway, “those big feet of his are scary.”
“Oh, poppa's? Yes, I wouldn't want to be stepped on by those,” Dukee said.
Mia laid down and stretched her body out, “well I have been and they do hurt.”
“Poppa stepped on you?” Dukee asked.
“Yes, when I was younger and a lot smaller. I guess I shouldn’t have been around his feet because I don’t think he saw me,” Mia said.
“Oh yeah, he probably didn’t see you. Well, I’m sorry that you were stepped on,” Dukee said while he watched Mia stretch again.
“Thank you. That’s why I hide when I hear him walking,” Mia said and then rolled over.
That’s understandable,” Dukee said and then walked over to the bench by the window.
He jumped up and looked outside. Mia got up and walked towards Dukee and the bench.
“Do you see any lizards?” Mia asked.
“Yes, there is one sitting on that thing out there,” Dukee said.
Mia jumped up on the other end of the bench and looked out the window, “oh yeah, I think I’ve seen that one in the porch different times.”
Dukee laid down where he sat and the two of them watched the lizard together. Dukee thought for a moment about how scary being stepped on must have been for Mia when she was smaller, but he didn’t say any more about it. When the lizard then jumped down and left their sight, a large black crow flew down and landed in the front yard. Mia ducked her head low and Dukee looked at her.
“That bird can’t get you in here,” Dukee said.
“I know but those birds scare me for some reason,” Mia said.
The crow squawked loudly.
“I can see why you feel that way. They can be loud and looks to be bossy too,” Dukee said.
The crow squawked again.
“Yes, loud for sure,” Mia said.
“Don’t worry Mia, I’ll protect you,” Dukee said and then chattered at the bird.
The crow casually walked around the front yard as if it were looking for something. It wasn’t long though before it flew up and in the other direction. Mia lifted her head back up and looked around.
“It’s gone,” Dukee said.
“That’s good. I don’t mind those white birds or the smaller birds, but there’s something about those birds that bother me,” Mia said and then licked her left paw.
“I understand,” Dukee said.
Mia was happy that Dukee said he’d protect her. She sort of felt like she had a big brother in him.
The two of them just laid there and chatted for a few minutes. Sometimes quiet time is all they want.
Until next week, Mia and Dukee hope that the rest of your week is fun. But if you must have fireworks think of the animals and keep it short. Happy 4th of July everyone.
Our little Marie was laying in the living room window yesterday on the cat perch I installed several years ago. Then we saw her suddenly jump into a crouvh and her tail was whipping back and forth. I quietly went to see what she was looking at. There was a gecko on the outside window ledge crawling around. When I told Paula what Marie was looking at she got concerned it was inside. I had to assure her itvwas outside. If I find them inside I try to catch them and put them back outside. If the girls find them first they don't like giving them to me. It's a fight trying to be the first one to catch them. We aren't looking forward to tomorrow night. These girls don't seem to get as scared and upset as the dogs did. I had to put Thundershirts on them a day or two before and after July 4th and New Year's Eve. Gracie would hide and Riley would race around barking each time he would hear the fireworks bang. We lost them both 3 years ago so it isn't so bad. The little girls still get scared some but will get in my lap and get calm down. Hope it doesn't get too bad there.
Happy 4th of July to you as well ! Be safe everybody ! ! Also please do think of all animals !
Our fur babies and many animals are intelligent.
