An hour had passed and no creature yet.
“What if it doesn’t come tonight?” Officer Jons asked.
“We sit here again tomorrow night, and if it doesn’t come then, we’ll sit here the next night. We have to get this thing before anyone else comes up dead.” Sheriff Brown stared through the window.
“It is possible that it might have moved on, but on the other hand it knows it has gotten lucky here with finding something to eat.” Mr. Gunn looked at the sheriff.
“Did you know that using a cow for bait was done before? I was watching a movie about a community and an extremely large alligator.” Mr. Gunn adjusted his chair.
“Yes I have seen that movie, now can we all be quiet.” Sheriff Brown whispered.
Another hour went by, so it was around 11:30 pm. The calf looked around and occasionally mooed but seemed to be content.
“Guys… I see something.” Officer Benjamin whispered.
The sheriff, Mr. Gunn, and officer Jons peered through the tent window. At first, they didn’t see anything until it got closer. The calf must have sensed that something was coming toward it because it turned around and faced the direction of the creature.
“Look at the size of that thing.” Mr. Gunn whispered.
Officer Benjamin refocused his eyes and took the shot. The creature jumped, turned, and started to run back in the other direction when it collapsed. Officer Jons grabbed the net and darted out of the tent, with sheriff Brown right behind. The creature was moving slightly as officer Jons threw the net on top of it. Thankfully as big as it was, they didn’t have to wrestle it to the ground, the tranquilizer did the job. Mr. Gunn ran down by the sheriff and was amazed to see what looked like an oversized salamander with scales.
“This is phenomenal! What a find this is.” Mr. Gunn stared at it.
The creature was out cold and no longer moved so the four men tried to get a hold of it and pick it up.
“It’s too slippery, go get the tarp.” The sheriff looked at officer Jons.
Officer Jons got the tarp and laid it out on the sand. Mr. Gunn and the sheriff carefully rolled it onto the tarp. They were able to drag it back up to the edge of the road where they had an open trailer. Officer Benjamin pulled out the plywood which made a ramp and the sheriff struggled to pull the tarp and creature up it.
“I think that we should tie the legs together just to be on the safe side.” Sheriff Brown hopped off the trailer.
Officer Benjamin grabbed some rope and climbed into the trailer, and officer Jons went down the beach to get the calf. Sheriff Brown decided to call the farmer and let him know that he could come and pick up his calf. The trailer was sitting under a street light so Mr. Gunn pulled out his cell phone and started to take pictures of the creature.
“This is just amazing. Two very unlikely species becoming one.” Mr. Gunn leaned in for a closer look.
Just then, the creature’s back leg kicked, and Mr. Gunn and officer Benjamin jumped back. It was only a reflex but startled them just the same. Officer Benjamin grabbed that leg and the other and finished tying it up.
“About six foot was what I was thinking, and It also has the leg height of a cougar or mountain lion. It’s no wonder why those two women didn’t survive, being attacked by this thing.” Mr. Gunn took a couple more pictures.
