When Thursday came around sheriff Brown knew approximately where he was going to set up the decoy at the beach. He also went over the plan of attack with his officers and Mr. Gunn. The decoy is going to be a calf that a local farmer agreed to lend them. It will be hooked up to a post on the beach about 60 feet from the road. Sheriff Brown, Mr. Gunn, and two officers will be inside a large tent on the beach right off the road (about 50 feet away from the calf). They will have their issued guns but will also have tranquilizer guns. When the creature approaches the calf officer Benjamin will shoot it with a tranquilizer. Officer Jons and the sheriff will hopefully be able to throw a net on it and pin it down. Since they haven’t seen this thing yet they are not quite sure how it will all work out.
The attacks were always late at night so sheriff Brown decided that they would be at the beach by 9’oclock. Being a Thursday night the area shouldn’t be too busy. While officer Jons and Benjamin were setting up the tent, a local drunk staggered over to them.
“Hey ociffer what, what are ya’s doin?” The drunk stumbled into officer Jons.
Officer Jons stabled the man and then gave him a little shove, “Go on now, get out of here and never mind what we are doing.”
“Okay okay, I’m just trying to have have a little fun.” The drunk staggered down the sidewalk.
Sheriff Brown and biologist Mr. Gunn were on the beach. The sheriff hammered a post into the sand where the calf will be hooked up to.
“So why do you think this creature decided to terrorize my beach?” Sheriff Brown asked Mr. Gunn.
“Well, it’s really hard to say. Maybe it has hit other areas as well. I think that because of what I believe the size to be, around six foot that it’s not finding enough to eat.” Mr. Gunn looked out over the dark ocean.
A few minutes later officer Benjamin hollered down that the farmer with the calf was there. The sheriff and Mr. Gunn went back up to the road and talked to the farmer. Officer Jons and Benjamin walked the calf down onto the beach by the post and hooked him up.
“I sure hope that we can shoot this thing before it gets to the calf.” Officer Jons pet the calf.
“Don’t worry, the minute I have that thing in my sight, bang, it’s going down.” Benjamin holds up an invisible rifle.
The two officers walked back up to the tent and sheriff Brown had just thanked and said goodbye to the farmer. A couple of taverns were still open but it was pretty quiet by now. You could hear the waves roll in and some wind blow but no traffic noise. The little calf seemed unsure of what was going on and started to moo.
“Well gentlemen, all we can do now is wait.” Sheriff Brown walked into the tent.
The sheriff unzipped the tent window which faced the calf and sat down. Mr. Gunn also pulled up a chair and focused on the calf. Officer Benjamin sat very still right outside the tent with the tranquilizer rifle.
“I sure hope that we don’t have to sit here all night.” Officer Jons wrestled with the net.
“We have to get this thing before anyone else gets hurt.” Sheriff Brown said as he stared out the window.
