A day later marine biologist Mr. Gunn called sheriff Brown and told him he knew what the scales came from. He said that it’s hard to believe the joining of these two species, but it is possible.
“Sheriff, can we meet up again so I can show you what I discovered?” Mr. Gunn asked.
“Yes, come to my office and I’ll be waiting.” Sheriff Brown said.
About 45 minutes later Mr. Gunn showed up at the station and met with the sheriff. He plopped down two pictures on the sheriff’s desk and pointed to the Hoodwinker Sunfish.
“This is what the scales came off of and it can grow up to seven feet, but it also has the DNA of this one .” Dunn pointed to the Axolotl/Mexican walking fish.
“So what are you saying we have a seven-foot, four-legged fish attacking people?” The sheriff leaned back in his chair.
“I know it’s hard to believe but I think that somehow these two species intertwined. The Mexican Walking Fish is in the salamander family, therefore it can be out of the water for some time.” Mr. Gunn smiled.
“Okay if this is what we are searching for, how do we go about it?” Sheriff Brown asked.
“Set out decoys on the beach and wait. Then when it comes out, catch it with a net.” Gunn said.
“Catch it? I’m going to shoot it!” Sheriff sat up in his chair.
“Sheriff, you can’t shoot it, this will be a unique find.” Mr. Gunn pulled up a chair.
“This thing is killing people, and unless there is a way to keep it secure it’s going to die.” Sheriff Brown said.
“Okay okay, we will deal with that when the time comes.” Mr. Gunn sighed.
Around four o’clock, Investigator Mr. Bigsby called sheriff Brown and told him the identity of the severed head. It was Patricia White, the first victim who went missing. They were able to get her identity from her dental records. So now Sheriff Brown had to contact John and break the news to him about his wife. That part of the job was always very hard. The sheriff got a hold of John and went over to his home. When John saw sheriff Brown’s face he knew that it wasn’t good news but invited him in. The sheriff explained that they had found a severed head a couple of days ago at the beach and that it was his wife Patricia. He also told John that he thinks he knows what it was that did that to his wife.
“This is unbelievable. You think some giant fish attacked and killed my wife?” John scratched his head.
“Yes, and attacked Phillip Mitchel and killed Cathy Humphrey. But don’t worry because I have a plan and we will catch this thing.” Sheriff Brown stepped out onto the porch. “You take it easy John, and again I’m sorry about Patricia.” The sheriff walked down the steps.
“Sheriff… Thank you.” John slowly closed the door.
Sheriff Brown went back to the station to talk to his officers and set up a plan to capture or kill this thing. He called Mr. Gunn and asked him if he wanted to help him. Of course, he was ecstatic to help out and see such a creature. The details had to be worked out but sheriff Brown told everyone that they will try and get this thing Thursday night.
