It’s a warm and sunny day at the farm. Tiger and Shrimp are about to meet farmer Joe’s niece Adelyn and her mama Megan. Megan lives in the city and doesn’t get to the farm very often. But today is Adelyn’s third birthday and the party is being held at the farm. Shrimp was running around in front of the barn when she saw a black car that she hadn’t seen before pull into the driveway. She stopped and watched as farmer Joe walked up to the car.
I wonder who that is, Shrimp thought.
Tiger ran out of the barn to see what Shrimp was watching when he saw a pretty lady get out of the car.
“Who do you think that is?” Tiger walked up next to Shrimp.
“I don’t know, but look, there’s a little one too,” Shrimp said.
Megan handed little Adelyn to her uncle Joe and closed the car door. Adelyn smiled and pointed when she saw Shrimp and Tiger watching from in front of the barn. Farmer Joe looked and asked if she wanted to see the kittens. Adelyn nodded her head yes, so Joe carried her over to Shrimp and Tiger. Megan followed Joe and Adelyn over to the kittens. Tiger backed up a little out of fear but Shrimp stood still and waited. Joe put Adelyn down on the driveway and picked up Shrimp. Adelyn reached out and carefully petted Shrimp on her head. Shrimp looked at Adelyn’s pretty little face and purred.
Tiger watched and saw that everything seemed alright with his little sister so he sat down. Megan walked over and picked up Tiger. She held him close to her chest and kissed him on top of his head. Tiger looked up at Megan and licked her on the cheek. Farmer Joe held Shrimp out to Adelyn and she pulled her close. What a sweet little girl, Shrimp thought. Farmer Joe let Adelyn hold Shrimp for a few minutes when another car pulled into the driveway. Tiger wiggled and jumped down out of Megan’s arm and ran into the barn.
Adelyn put Shrimp down and ran over to the kids that got out of that car. Shrimp watched while Joe, Megan, and Adelyn went into the house with the other kids. Tiger was peeking from a crack in the barn door and saw that everyone left.
Shrimp trotted into the barn and looked around for Tiger, “weren’t they nice?”
Tiger walked out from behind the barn door, “yes they are. The pretty lady even kissed me on the head.”
“Well, what did you run in here for then?” Shrimp asked.
“That other car scared me. I wasn’t expecting more people,” Tiger looked out into the driveway.
“Well, I heard the pretty lady say something about a party,” Shrimp hopped around.
“What’s a party?” Tiger asked.
Just then, Billy, the black bird flew down from the hayloft.
“A party is where people get together to celebrate a good thing,” Billy said.
“Oh, hi Billy. So, what are they celebrating?” Shrimp asked.
“Adelyn, the little girl turned three years old. So they are having a birthday party,” Billy hopped out into the driveway.
“A birthday party? That sounds like fun,” Shrimp said as she trotted around.
“I’d like to have a birthday party,” Tiger said as he trotted out onto the driveway.
“Me too,” Shrimp jumped high.
“Well, maybe you two will have a party when you turn one,” Billy said.
“Yay, and it will be fun won’t it be, Billy?” Shrimp asked.
“I’m sure it will be,” Billy said as he watched the two kittens hop and jump around each other.
