Shrimp And Rambo's First Conversation
As the sun rose higher into the sky, the afternoon got warmer. The beautiful day made Shrimp want to play. She looked around for someone to play with but didn’t see anyone. Tiger already told her that he didn’t feel like playing right now. So, Shrimp wandered around the yard and looked for something to play with. She stopped and played with a twig that was lying in the driveway until a big gust of wind blew some leaves to the ground. Shrimp watched as the biggest maple leaf that landed slowly glided across the driveway.
When the leaf stopped, Shrimp ran over to it. The wind blew again so the leaf flew up and was tossed toward the barn. This made Shrimp jump and hop as she followed the big leaf as it landed on the grass. Every time the wind blew, the leaf moved further into the grass. This was a fun game for Shrimp. What she didn’t realize was that the last big gust of wind blew the leaf right into the pasture. When Shrimp finally caught up to the moving leaf, she noticed where she was.
“Uh oh, I’m in the pasture. I have to be careful of the cows,” Shrimp said as she looked around.
There were two cows off to her left that looked at her. Quickly they moved away from her and joined the other group.
“I don’t know why they seem afraid of me, I’m not going to hurt them,” Shrimp said.
“They don’t know that,” said someone with a deep voice.
Shrimp quickly turned around to see who said that, “oh, it’s you. You’re Rambo, right?”
“That is the name they gave me,” Rambo said.
“Hi Rambo, I’m Shrimp,”
“It’s nice to meet you Shrimp. Why did you wait so long to come and see me?” Rambo asked.
“Well, I was told by farmer Joe that I should stay out of the pasture so that I don’t get stepped on,” Shrimp looked at the long brown hair that hung down on Rambo’s face.
“Oh, well that’s understandable. A cow or bulls hoof can cause a serious injury on someone as small as you. But if you come in here again, I will look out for you, and as long as you don’t scare the ladies on purpose, they should look out for you as well,” Rambo said.
“But I wouldn’t scare them, I’m so little,” Shrimp said.
“Sometimes the small and mysterious can be scary. They don’t know what your intentions might be so it scares them,” Rambo explained.
“Oh, I never thought of it that way. Well, can you let them know that I won’t hurt them?” Shrimp asked.
“Certainly I will,” Rambo said and nodded his head.
“So, how do you like it here so far?” Shrimp asked.
“Oh, it’s very nice here. Nice and quiet. Where I used to live, there were a lot of trucks in and out, and more humans,” Rambo said.
“Farmer Joe and his wife have other humans visit sometimes, but otherwise it’s just them. And they are really good to us too,” Shrimp said.
“Well, that is good to hear. Since you are so young, I bet that you haven't seen anything like me before, have you?” Rambo asked.
'“No I haven't. I like all your hair though. It's really pretty,” Shrimp said.
“Oh, thank you. It does keep me warmer on those chilly nights,” Rambo said.
“Farmer Joe put together some nice beds for Tiger, Momma, and me in the barn. Otherwise I was born in that tree trunk over there,” Shrimp pointed at the big tree.
“Well, I'm sure the barn will keep you warmer then that tree. I get to go into the other barn over there if it gets too cold. There are some nice mounds of straw for us to lay on inside,” Rambo said.
Just then, Shrimp heard her name being called. She looked and saw that Tiger was looking for her.
“Well, my brother Tiger is calling me so I better get going. I'll talk to you later,” Shrimp said.
“Okay Shrimp, thank you for visiting with me,” Rambo said.
“Oh, you're welcome. It was my pleasure. Bye,” Shrimp trotted out of the pasture.
Shrimp yelled out to Tiger, “I'm coming.”
“What were you doing in the pasture? You know that you aren't supposed to be in there,” Tiger said.
“It's okay, I was talking to Rambo, and he said that he would watch out for me. He was happy that I visited him, even though it was by accident,” Shrimp said.
“Well, if you do go in there again, just be careful,” Tiger said.
“I will. What did you want anyways?” Shrimp asked.
“Oh, Joe put more food in the bowl,” Tiger said.
“Oh goody, I'm hungry,” Shrimp said.
Shrimp ran into the barn to get something to eat while Tiger trotted behind her.
