Schizophrenia, Why People Fear That Word.
They Don't Mean To Be Violent
Schizophrenia is defined:
It’s a severe mental disorder that is chronic, it affects how one expresses emotions, how they think, and how they act. Their perception of reality can also be distorted if not treated.
In The Movies
Many people hear the word schizophrenic and right away think the person is bad. The movies and TV programs that we watch also make a person with schizophrenia seem bad. But in reality, it’s not the case.
A person who has the mental disorder schizophrenia, if on proper treatment can be just as normal as the next guy. They are not normally violent and don’t have multiple personalities like some people might think. They only struggle with what their brain might be telling them.
It’s A Disease Like Cancer
Schizophrenia like other mental illnesses is a disease like cancer, where having a treatment plan helps. Without medications, therapy, or other treatments, the disease can interrupt a persons life. A person with schizophrenia can struggle with psychosis, which is where reality becomes jumbled in their mind. Thoughts, images, and sounds become distorted from what is actually going on in the real world.
They can become scared and paranoid when their brain enters into a psychotic state. If you know them as a good person, and know how they usually act, seeing them during an episode can be alarming. This is why treatment is a must for someone with schizophrenia.
The only reason why a person with schizophrenia would be violent, is if they are off their medication, or it’s not working. For some reason their brain will confuse them, and tell them things that are not true. This why you might have heard someone say that they hear voices that aren’t really there.
Help Them Get Help
If you know someone who is struggling with schizophrenia, help them to seek treatment. Because with treatment, most can live a semi-normal life. Some signs to look for are, that they are having hallucinations. They seem delirious, have strong outbursts, say things that don’t make any sense, or withdraw completely.
If you are in a situation where you know that they need help, and they aren’t compliant, call 911. Tell the operator the situation, because in most cases now, some police precincts have trained personal to handle people with mental illness. Just remember, that you are calling to get them the help that they need.
