When the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, Rose walked back into the kitchen. She poured herself a cup of coffee and put in her Sweet N Low. This time she put the Snickers flavored creamer in her coffee. It gives the coffee a little chocolate and caramel taste which Rose enjoys occasionally.
Rose stirred her coffee and carried her cup out into the living room. I think I’ll go outside, Rose thought and walked to the front door. She went outside onto the front porch and sat down in the rocking chair. She was trying to fight off any thoughts of the dead body found from entering her head, but it was hard.
Just then, her cell phone rang. Rose got up and hurried inside. She set her coffee cup down on the desk and answered her phone. It was her aunt Patty and she was upset and angry. Rose couldn’t get a word into the conversation. Patty went on to say that some detective was investigating a corpse found in her mom’s basement. Rose tried to explain the situation to her but Patty was just too shook up at this time. Patty just rambled on about how her mother couldn’t have ever hurt anyone.
Rose tried to say that she understood that but Patty continued to cut her off until she said goodbye. Rose hung up her phone and set it down on the desk. I knew that it was a matter of time before the police called my family, she thought. She picked up her coffee cup and walked into the kitchen. She added more hot coffee to her cup and just a little more creamer.
“Maybe I should call the rest of my family before anyone else does… Oh, it’s probably too late already,” Rose took a drink of her coffee.
I’ll just have to deal with it and whoever calls me next, she thought.
Rose walked out onto the front porch and gazed down her driveway and across the road. It was quiet at the neighbor's house this morning. She looked across the field and saw a neighbor doing something by their barn. And the robins in the tree in the front yard were singing their lovely song. Rose sat back down in the rocking chair and listened to the bird's sing. The peace that can be felt just listening to nature is a blessing. It must be hard to not be able to hear these beautiful sounds, she thought.
“Of course, people who have always been deaf, don’t know what they are missing,” Rose looked at the birds in the tree.
She drank her coffee and shifted her thinking to the curtains that she was going to make. They aren’t going to be anything fancy, just pretty new sheers to soften the edges of the window. I might even make some new ones for my bedroom, she thought. She finished her coffee and went back into the house. Rose went into the kitchen to get another cup of coffee before she went upstairs.
On her way to the stairs she picked up and unplugged her cell phone. Just in case someone calls, I better have this close, she thought. Rose carried her coffee and cell phone upstairs and into her sewing room. She took a drink and set them both on the dresser that is in there. She walked over to her sewing table and looked at the fabric that was lying there.
“This fabric is going to look really pretty hanging up there,” Rose held the fabric up.
Rose took out her measuring tape and measured and pinned the fabric. She was going to keep the sheers short and not drop them all the way to the floor. Once she had the fabric pinned where she needed it, she began to sew. Making simple sheers with a sewing machine won’t take that long to do, at least for one window. Because Rose really liked this fabric, she did buy enough material for two windows just in case.
It was around nine-thirty now and Rose was surprised that her phone was still quiet. Just as she thought that her cell phone rang. She dreaded getting it but got up and saw that it was Josh.
“Good morning Josh” Rose smiled.
“Good morning, I just called to see how you were doing?” Josh said.
“Well, other than getting an ear full from my aunt Patty this morning, I’m not too bad,” Rose said.
“Well, that’s good. I know that you have been through a lot so I am concerned about you. I also wanted to thank you again for the bed that you gave me. I set it up last night and slept on it already,” Josh said.
“Oh, you’re welcome, how does your girlfriend like it?” Rose asked.
“Well, that’s kind of why I needed a bed. We are still living in the same house but things aren’t working out that good anymore,” Josh said.
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” Rose smiled.
“It’s okay, I had a feeling a while ago that she was losing interest in me… She might even be seeing someone else already but I’m not sure,” He said.
“Well, I know that it’s none of my business but that wouldn’t be right if she was,” Rose said.
“Well, it is is what it is, but thank you though,” Josh said. I have to get going now, so I’ll talk to you soon,” Josh said.
“Okay Josh, you take care. Bye-bye,” Rose hung up her phone.
Rose walked over to her sewing machine with a big smile on her face. She sat down and finished sewing her curtains. She knew that she wasn’t going to jump into a relationship with Josh so soon, but knowing that the option was there pleased her. She did feel sad for him though cause she knows how it feels to lose someone you loved.
“There, all done,” Rose cut the last thread.
She hung up her new curtains, stepped back, and smiled.
