It was around three o’clock now which means Rose has been gone for about an hour and a half. She took her items to the cashier and had them rung up. When Rose left the store, she decided to get something to eat. She noticed a Subway restaurant just down the sidewalk from Joann’s Fabrics. Rose walked to her car and put the items that she bought in the back seat of her car. She locked it up and then she walked down to Subway.
Rose walked inside the restaurant and up to the order counter. She ordered herself a turkey with bacon on six-inch Italian herbs and cheese bread. Rose also ordered a twelve-inch ham and cheese on plain Italian bread for Josh. On her sandwich she had the sandwich artist put lettuce, tomato, a few pieces of onion, cucumbers, green peppers, mayonnaise, and oregano. Rose told them only lettuce and tomato on the other. She didn’t know what Josh would like so she kept it simple.
After Rose purchased the sandwiches and drinks, she walked to her car, put Joshes sandwich on the passenger seat, and she ate hers. She would rather enjoy it in her car than eat it at home thinking about a dead body being dug up in her basement. When she was done eating, she started her car and put her hands on the steering wheel. Okay, I can go home now, she thought.
Rose left the parking lot and headed for home. On the drive home, she enjoyed seeing the few farms that were out her way. She saw kids running around, and a dog chasing them. At another farm, someone was riding a horse in the field. It is the country life that gives Rose pleasure and right now that is what she needed.
When Rose pulled into her driveway she saw one of the forensic team members putting stuff into the van. I hope that means that they are done, she thought. Rose drove onto her front lawn and parked. She got out of her car and noticed that Josh had the bed already in his truck. Rose grabbed Joshes sandwich and drink and closed the door. Josh heard her car door and walked outside.
Josh trotted down the front steps and over to Rose, “How are you doing?”
“I’m better, thank you… Here, I thought that you might be hungry,” Rose handed him his sandwich and drink.
“Oh, thank you,” Josh took them from her.
Rose took the fabric and items that she bought at Joann’s out from her back seat and closed the door, “Are they done yet?” Rose whispered to Josh.
“They’ve been back and forth to the van so I’m not real sure,” Josh walked with Rose to the house.
As Rose and Josh walked into the house officer Porter walked up to them.
“I think they are getting closer to being done,” he said.
“Okay… Would you like something to drink officer Porter?” Rose asked.
“Just some water would be nice,” he said.
Rose put her shopping bag and purse down on the sofa as she walked through to the kitchen. From the refrigerator, Rose took out a bottle of water and handed it to officer Porter.
“Thank you, ma’am,” Porter walked over to the back door.
Josh went back outside to the front porch to eat his sandwich. Rose took her shopping bag upstairs and into her sewing room. She pulled the chair away from the table and sat down. She stared out the window and watched as the two birds were flying around in the sky. Rose was trying to understand that if that was uncle Ralph, what could he have done that was so awful to be killed and buried in the basement? And was it grandma that did it, she thought.
Rose was in such a daze watching the birds and thinking, that she didn’t hear officer Dunn step into the room.
“Excuse me, Rose…”
“Oh, yes?” Rose turned around to look at her.
“They are finishing up now, so officer Porter and I will be leaving now,” officer Dunn said.
“Okay, thank you… Will I be notified when they find out who it is?” Rose asked.
“Yes, we will keep you informed,” officer Dunn said.
“Okay, thank you,” Rose watched as officer Dunn walked away.
As Rose continued to sit there reflecting, the two officers left. The forensics team was there about half an hour longer packing up their equipment. Josh came back into the house and washed his hands in the kitchen. The last man walked up from the basement and told Josh that they were done and walked out the back door. Josh dried his hands on a paper towel and then went upstairs to tell Rose.
