While rose lay in her bed on her left side, she noticed a shadow moving on the wall. It was from the top few branches of the tree outside of her window. She had the one window lifted slightly to let some fresh air in. The temperature did drop some, to about 75 degrees, so the air was pleasantly cool. She listened to the chirping of crickets and tried to fall asleep, but it wasn’t working.
“You would think that I would be tired after this long day,” Rose sighed.
She rolled over onto her back and stared at the dark ceiling. Trying to shut her brain down, she closed her eyes and listened as the sound of the crickets got softer and softer. Rose was finally asleep, and the cool breeze blew through the opened portion of the window. It was cool enough that during her sleep, she pulled the blanket up over her shoulders.
A couple of hours into her heavy slumber, she was startled awake by a loud boom. She quickly sat up and tried to comprehend what that noise might have been. And then, the rain poured down, and she knew then that it was probably thunder. A bright flash of lightning lit up her room, followed by another loud rumble.
Rose pushed her blanket off as she got up to close the window. The heavy rain hit the ground hard as she watched out her window. Just then, a loud noise came from one of the other rooms. She grabbed her thin bed coat and put it on. Slowly Rose walked out of her room and peeked into the sitting area. There was that noise again, and It seemed to come from her grandmother's old room.
She reached around the corner for the light switch, but there wasn’t any power. And she hadn’t unpacked yet so she didn’t have a flashlight. Rose paused for a moment, then gathered the nerve to check on that noise. She carefully walked across the sitting area to the closed door of her grandma's room. She grabbed onto the antique doorknob, turned it, and carefully opened the door.
She peeked inside the dark quiet room. Bang, bang, the noise went. Rose jumped back but then knew what it probably was. She walked over to the window in her grandma's old room. As she slid the drape to one side, she saw the window was open. There must be a loose shutter outside this window, she thought. Rose closed the window and noted to herself that she will have to get that shutter fixed.
She shivered a little as she walked back out of that room, and closed the door. Bang, went the noise again, only quieter. Carefully she walked back to her room and climbed into bed. She snuggled the blanket up to her neck… Now let’s get some sleep, she thought. It didn’t take too long with the sound of the rain for Rose to drift off to sleep.
