When the cable guy was done rattling off everything good about the new cable package he was offering, Rose asked him his name.
“Oh, sorry ma’am, my name is George… I’m sort of new to this sales gig and I memorized everything I had to tell you.”
“Well, George, you don’t have to sell me on it because I already want cable hooked up. So you can relax, and my name is Rose,” She reached out her hand.
George shook her hand and smiled. He seemed to be at retirement age but yet he is working for the cable company. Rose didn’t want to pry into his business so she just went on to tell him that she only needed cable in the living room. She also told him that she wanted wireless internet too. So with his handy clipboard, George filled out the paperwork and told her how much the cost per month would be.
He told her that he was only the salesman and that he has to call it in to set up a time for someone to come out. She told him that anytime was fine for her. While George was on the phone, Rose looked out the front windows to see where Josh was. She saw him off to the one side of the porch painting the railing. Sweat was starting to run down his face so he pulled up the bottom of his white t-shirt and wiped it off.
“Okay Rose, I have it set for tomorrow morning around ten, is that okay?” George asked.
Rose was so focused on Josh painting the porch that she didn’t even hear George.
“Excuse me, Rose?”
“Oh, I’m sorry George, what did you say?” Rose turned around to face him with a smile.
“I have it set for tomorrow around 10 am, is that okay?” He handed her the customer copy of the order.
“Oh yes that would be fine, thank you so much, George,” Rose walked him to the front door.
“If you don’t mind my asking, what happened to the lady that lived here?” George asked.
“Well, the lady that lived here was my grandmother and she passed away not too long ago,” Rose opened the front door.
“Oh, I’m so sorry… I never had the courage to talk to her, but I saw her in the grocery store many times,” George said.
“Thank you George, and thank you for stopping by,” Rose smiled.
“If you need anything, just give us a call,” He said while he walked down the steps.
Rose stepped out on the porch and smiled at Josh. She then turned and walked back inside. She closed the door and went into the kitchen. She poured her cup of coffee down the drain and started over. The coffee pot was still on so the coffee was still hot. She poured herself a new cup and took out her Sweet Irish Crème creamer from the refrigerator. She added her packet of sweet-n-low and creamer, then stirred it. She finally got to sit down and enjoy her morning coffee.
She sat at the kitchen table and sipped her flavor-filled cup of delight. That’s right, I need to go up in the attic today and see what’s up there, she thought. She also thought, I should wash those curtains today too, as she looked at the kitchen windows. Rose sat there for moment holding her cup while she enjoyed the relaxed feeling that she was having.
“I don’t think that life can get any better,” Rose drank the last drops of coffee that were in her cup.
