When the song got done playing, Rose was smiling from ear to ear until it dawned on her. But why was I hearing that song when the radio wasn’t on, she thought. Just then a purple car pulled into her driveway. She turned to look to see who it was but didn’t recognize the car. A lady got out of the driver's side of the car and closed the door.
“Hi, Rose… Do you recognize me?” The lady walked a little closer.
Rose really focused on her face, “Lisa?”
“Yes it’s me,” she walked up and hugged Rose.
“Oh my goodness, I can’t believe it’s you,” Rose hugged back.
Lisa was a neighbor girl who would come over to play with Rose when she stayed with her grandmother. Rose asked her if she could stay for a while but she couldn’t this time. Lisa heard that Rose had moved in so she thought she would stop before she picked up her children. Rose gave Lisa her phone number and asked her to please make some time to come visit. Rose waved as Lisa backed out of the driveway.
“Wow, I can’t believe she still lives in the area,” Rose smiled.
She picked the shovel back up from the ground and continued to dig her holes. In one of the holes, she hit something with the shovel. She took the spade and dug in the hole, and pulled out a ring of keys. Well, that’s a strange thing to find, she thought. It was a rusty metal keyring with four rusty keys on it. It looked like two keys were for a car and the other two for a house. I wonder who lost their keys, she thought.
Rose shook the dirt off of the keys and set them on the porch floor. Once again she picked up the shovel and dug more holes. She decided to plant the four Zinnias in the back by the porch in both beds, and then the Black-eyed Susan’s. The next row she planted was the purple PowWow Wild Berry, followed by the Dusty Miller plants. It’s a nice variety of colors and textures.
By the time she was done, she was starving. She took the tools back to the barn and grabbed the hose on the way back. There was a hose and faucet alongside the house. She put the nozzle on the end of the hose and turned the water on. Rose admired her hard work while she sprayed the plants with water. It sure looks better than it did, she thought.
“I think grandma would be proud,” Rose smiled.
When Rose gave the flower beds a good soaking, she wound up the hose and went into the house. She walked into the kitchen and put the keys on the counter. With the dish soap, she had handy, she washed her hands and arms. She grabbed the towel that was there and dried herself off. Rose looked at the keys sitting there on the counter, and couldn’t figure out why they would be buried in the flower bed. And how long have they been there, she thought.
