Rose unpacked her groceries and found a home for everything. Grandma's fairly new refrigerator/freezer was working great and had plenty of room for all her food and goodies. Rose had a sweet tooth for cheesecake, and because she didn’t have her grandma’s homemade anymore, Sara Lee would have to do.
It wasn’t long before she heard the delivery truck arrive, and she met them outside. She directed them to where they could unload the plants, and she was excited to get started. After the men left, she walked to the barn to get some gloves and a shovel. She hadn’t looked in the barn yet so she didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t a large farm-type barn, but it was bigger than a shed.
Rose took the rusty padlock off and carefully slid the brown door to one side. Inside was a riding lawnmower, a rototiller, a bunch of empty flower pots, and various other gardening tools. She looked around for some gloves but realized that they must be in the basement. This would be a better place for that potting bench, she thought. She grabbed a large and small shovel and carried them to the front of the house.
Rose went inside and went to the kitchen and opened up the back door. She then paused by the basement door and opened it.
“You have got to get over that fear,” she flipped the light switch on and trotted down the steps.
The gloves that she was looking for were laying on the potting bench. She also noticed a spray nozzle for the hose and grabbed that. Back up the stairs, she trotted and went out the front door. Just then, she heard that music again. It always seems to be the same song that she hears but she can’t place it. She slowly walked back into the house and heard it coming from the kitchen. Rose peeked around the doorway to the kitchen and heard it coming from the basement.
She walked over to the basement door and as she reached for the knob, this time the music stopped. Am I losing my mind, she thought. She pulled her hand away from the door and it stayed quiet.
“Well, as long as I’m in here I might as well put these batteries that I bought in that radio.”
She carried the radio outside with her and turned it on. Rose turned the radio to a late 80s station that the area played. She set it on the porch floor and grabbed the large shovel. She stabbed the ground with the shovel and turned the dirt over. She did that throughout both beds to loosen the soil. After that, she opened up a fertilizer bag for each bed and mixed it with the dirt.
Now she was ready to place her plants and flowers. Rose dug her first hole close to the porch and grabbed a Black-eyed Susan. Just then a song came on the radio… Walking On Sunshine by Katrina And The Waves. Click here to listen
“That’s it… That’s the song I keep hearing… Uncle Ralph used to sing that to me. Oh my goodness it’s been so long since I have heard this song,” Rose started to dance.
