Rose took her kitchen trash out the back door and grabbed the other bag that was on the back porch. She carried them both to the trash can that was sitting by the corner of the house. She looked toward the front yard and saw Josh while she lifted the can lid. She dropped the bags into the can and put the lid back on. Rose walked out to the barn and walked inside. She carried out the screen door and looked it over. She didn’t know why it was taken off the front door.
As Rose was looking at the screen Josh drove up on the lawn mower.
“What are you thinking about doing with that?” Josh shut the mower off and asked.
“Well, it used to be on the front door and I don’t know why it was taken off,” she looked at Josh.
“Do you want me to put it back on there?” Josh asked.
“If you don’t mind,” Rose said.
“Sure, no problem,” he said.
“Also, down in the basement, I need your help lifting up a bookcase that fell over,” Rose said.
“Yeah, let me put this mower away, and then I’ll put that door back on first,” Josh got off the mower.
“Okay, I’ll see you in the house when you’re done,” Rose leaned the screen door up against the side of the barn.
Rose walked toward the house but enjoyed the warm sunshine. She stopped for a moment and looked out over the field. Country living has always been something that she’s enjoyed. She watched as a couple of birds were showing off their flying maneuvers over the field. Rose proceeded up the three steps of the back porch and went inside the house. She went down into the basement and picked up one of the boxes full of jars. She carried it up the steps, through the kitchen, and to the front door. She opened up the front door and took the box out onto the porch.
She put the box down and went back inside to get the other box. She walked through the living room, into the kitchen, and back down the basement stairs. Rose picked up the other box and carried it upstairs. She put that one on the front porch as well. Josh came walking around the front of the house with the screen door. So Rose went back inside so he could work on it.
She trotted back down the basement stairs and checked on her laundry. The first load was dry so she put them in her other basket and moved the wet ones to the dryer. Rose carried the clean dry clothes up the basement steps and closed the door. She took them all the way up to her bedroom and dumped the clothes onto her bed. She folded what she had to and hung the rest. She took the basket with her back downstairs and set it just inside the kitchen doorway.
Rose sat down on the sofa and gazed out the big bay window. A few minutes passed and Josh knocked on the door and opened it.
“Here you go Rose,” Josh called out.
Rose got up and walked to the front door. She saw the screen door back on its hinges.
“Yay, now I can leave the door open, thank you,” Rose smiled. “Would you like some lemonade or coffee or water?” Rose asked.
“Sure, I’ll have some lemonade if that’s okay?” Josh walked inside.
The two of them walked into the kitchen and Rose took the lemonade out of the fridge. She got a glass out of the cupboard and poured some lemonade in it for him.
“So you said a bookcase fell over in the basement?” Josh asked.
“Yeah, it's the strangest thing. All of a sudden, the other day it just fell over and some of my grandma's canning jars broke. What a mess it was,” Rose handed Josh his lemonade.
“Thank you,” he smiled.
Josh took a couple of sips and then gulped the rest down. He set the glass on the counter, “well, let’s take a look at that bookcase,” he walked to the basement door.
Rose followed him as he hurried down the steps. Josh looked at the area where the bookcase once stood. All of a sudden, Rose looked at Josh and Josh looked at her.
“Do you hear that?” Rose asked.
“Yeah, what is that?” Josh looked around.
Very faintly they heard the song “Walking On Sunshine”.
“Where is that coming from?” Josh walked around by the bookcases.
Just as quietly as the music was there, it quickly left.
“Josh, do me a favor and get me the shovel from the barn,” Rose asked.
“For what?” Josh looked at her.
“Please?” She looked at him.
Josh hurried up the basement steps and went out the back door to the barn. Rose carefully slid the bookcase that was on its side out of the way. Josh hurried back down the steps and handed Rose the shovel. Rose started to dig the dirt up where the bookcase once stood.
“What are you doing?” Josh looked at Rose.
“I have to check and make sure,” Rose said.
“What are you looking for?” Josh asked.
“My uncle Ralph,” Rose tossed some dirt to the side.
“Here, let me do it,” Josh took the shovel from her.
Josh didn’t ask any more questions, he just dug.
